Words are define a couple of ways. One is the denotation you'll likely find in a dictionary. The other is connotation which tends more toward commonly accepted usage and tends to change with it.

'Liberal' is one word which serves as an example of the denotation not keeping pace with the connotation.

I must say, I have been impressed with your posts, after my initial impression stuck you in an unflattering category. I am sure I have drifted into one, myself, in some threads.

My favorite Reagan trick was to redefine Ketchup as a vegetable to help schools wrestle free of encumbering bureacracy. Of course, it did not get reported that way.

I think we might be able to agree that in the past, this great country has benefitted from both liberal and conservative influences. Perhaps then we could agree to disagree about more recent events, and just hope that a decent balance prevails?

I'm one crusty conservative that wonders why we can't just enforce current laws wrt guns, and why we can't do the same wrt terrorists. Maybe agencies need to communicate better, but I wonder what we'll leave behind "on the books" for future abuse. Laws made by good men may be used to abuse the public in the future - look at the way the RICO laws were turned against abortion protesters as the "left" laughed - all it takes is a little looking the other way by both political persuasions, and pretty soon no one can assemble.

I don't think we have to agree to disagree - we agree!

Myself sometimes I am a liberal and sometimes I am a conservative. Like the week I get my paycheck I am liberal but the week I do not get a paycheck I am VERY conservative. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

That is funny.. I think the truth is a little bit the other way though.. the more assets people have to protect, generally the more 'conservative' they become...., when you've got little or nothing, well, everybody should just give their stuff away...

I think many people, including myself, are a bit socially "liberal" (original definition), but fiscally conservative. That is, I don't give a rat's behind if homosexuals marry, but I DO care than a giant amount of my paycheck is forcibly taken from me and redistributed to others (taxes --> entitlements), yes, I'm specifically talking about Socal Security... (and others)
