It\'s snowing here too

Just so no one thinks we are missing out, here is a shot of Mauna Kea, Hawaii, taken from Maui, about 25 miles away across the channel. Sorry for the poor quality, but my little camera is not much for long shots. Anyway, at the top of the mountain you will see the snow cap, which extends from the top at 14,000' down to about 11,000'. They even have a snow plow up there so that the observatories can function.

Re: It\'s snowing here too

I learned that you live on the highest mountain in the world. If you went to the bottom of the ocean to the top of the island your higher than Mt Everest. Only fitting that you have snow there.
Do they ski there??

Re: It\'s snowing here too

Yes, Mauna Kea is the highest if measured from the ocean trench off shore. But that is sort of like telling the temperature at the airport. (Nobody lives there...)

And yes, people do go skiing in the morning, but it is more for the telling of the story than for long runs down powdery slopes. You need a truck to let you off at one point, and pick you up lower. (And some oxygen if you are going to be there for long.) If you have $$$, there are helicopters to take you.

On Haleakala (Maui) snow is more rare at 10,000', but people go up to the top in pickups to load up a bunch, then race home to build a snowman and throw a few snowballs.

This year has been good for snow, and not done yet.

And yes, you can have pineapple, would you like some mosquitos to go with that? Plenty of them, too, from all the rain.
