I assume my tractor is still in the barn. It ain't like we got anything to mow in Texas.

In this heat you take any shade where you can get it. No relief in sight, 105 + for the rest of the week with very small chance of rain. On TV the other day they warned about the increase in snake bites as the snakes are moving more and more looking for water. So be very careful out there. They also issued a warning on rabid skunks for the same reason.

I'm starting to feel sorry for the wildlife.

I've heard of people turning their "pet" horses and donkeys loose to fend for themselves because their "ranches" no longer have enough grass to keep them fed. These SOBs are too cheap to buy hay, and that's after they got their ag exemption for their "ranch".

Very sad story in Parker county this week. 8 Horses dead from lack of water. The Sheriff is looking at neglect/cruelty charges. There is no excuse for it.

Man, I feel sorry for you guys south and north. We had a pretty long dry spell, but it is raining now and we have been a bit hot, but nothing excessive.

Your right.. I was driving from St. Louis to Springfield this morning and it was nothing but a down pour all of the way to Rolla. Just from this rain my pond is filling back up to normal!!! I will keep doing my rain dance and send some rain to your end of the state!!!

They have to have an established ranch for 5yrs to get AG exempt. Pet Horse dont count have to be working or breeding horse ranch and have so many per acre. And myself dont care to have any but hay is going for around $135 a bale whos fault is that? They done away with the packing plants,so thats why the horse market is flooded.I have had people try and give me them, cause you cannot sell them anymore unless good breeding or good working horses. And donkeys same way, they are just as bad. I understand that you should have feed but I couldnt afford to feed all my cows since im already feeding what little hay I have but I did take some to the sell, its not that easy for horses&donkeys, its in humane to slaughter horses.....

I feel for you, it is a very bad situation in Texas right now. You might try and contact Lone Star Equine Rescue, they should be able place the animals before they start to suffer.

in this heat an drought you only have 2 choices, feed them or send them to the salebarn.our cows are draining a 600 gal water trough 3 or 4 times a day now.plus they are eating 2 bales of hay in 3 or 4 days.plus 50 to 100lbs of meal every 2 or 3 days.i hope we get rain soon.we need to send a bunch to the sale but its to hot to pen them.

I hear that, had to get rid of some of the good cows (sale barn)and they all went to the slaughter houses. Seems some think that just cause we are AG exempt we make money off the ranch:laughing: Break Even Hopefully.....And say cattle prices are up .20cents lbs, alright now add up diesel up.50centsgal,now hay up$60 roll, humm!!!

Must be working because we are supposed to get some more this afternoon and tonight. Our ponds are still about a foot or more low, but this should help.

I sure hope some of this makes it down to those in Texas.

with the price of all the inputs going up so much its hard to breakeven.i like the farm to pull its weight, but the truth is i wont do anything else.this is the 1st drought that weve had to really buy feed in.

I wont ever get out, just had to down size alot.I usually can make enough hay to make it or just have to buy alittle but i made 31 bales on 30ac.wasnt as bad as some but I usually put atleast 90 back that will barely make it but ill be fed up in couple months."Baler still charged me a 2 bale an acre minimum". I just hope we have a wet winter so I can plant something. I couldnt imagine if my ponds wasnt spring fed, could be worse. I have my in-laws place leased and going to let the neighbors run his cows on just cause it has water. Neighbors helping Neighbors what its about:thumbsup:

i wont sellout completely either.but i dread seeing how deep in the hole i go on this drought.the guy was baliing 1 of our meadows an the equipment started a fire an burned all the raked hay plus 4 bales.we usually go into winter with 150 to 200 bales, aint happening this year.only have prolly 50 bales right now.

We need a good storm in the gulf and training rains. Two problems though:

1. Storm winds will damage trees that haven't already died. Soil this dry soil is weak!

2. The swirling high pressure dome over Texas is amazing. It steers most storms away and those that keep coming just get torn apart.

If a well-formed storm could get into the gulf, it could get huge. Plenty of latent heat in the atmosphere and gulf water temp is 85-87.

Well, don't have to listen to old-timers say it was worse in the 50's or the 20's. It wasn't. But if we don't get rain by September, Texas won't look the same in our lifetimes.

I think some of you may have misinterpreted the meaning of my original post. I have no issue with true working ranches or farms getting ag exemption. Likewise, I have no issue with someone using a piece of property to make a supplemental income from agricultural endeavors getting ag exemption. I thought since in my post I put the word ranch in quotation marks, I would get my meaning across. Maybe I should have used the word ranchette.

I was referring to the recreational property owner with 10 or so acres, that in order to avoid paying their fair share of property taxes, puts a couple of donkeys on the land to "qualify" for ag exemption. I think in some counties recreational horses; pets in other words, also qualify but I'm not sure. These are the same type that have a pickup that 99% of the time is used to drive from their suburb home to their office job but they have farm use license plates because they have a weekend ranchette.

I'd think the school funding issue could be helped quite a lot if these recreational properties were taxed as they should be. I have a weekend place and I pay taxes on it. I have no intention of trying to get ag exemption. There is a legal right and an ethical right.

OK, I'm stepping off my soapbox now. :D
