Re: It\'s tree removal time!

Time to fire up the burn pile. For now, I'm just interested in trying to clean up the trees I've had on the ground since I started building my workshop and home.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

You must have gotten the dozer running. My logger is burning now too. It is time to clean up the summer's messes.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

This has been burning for about two weeks. Every morning, more trees are added to it.

Highbeam,

It's running really strong all of a sudden. Not sure what happened, because I was ready to pull the pump. I got awesome power again, so it will keep running until it blows up, or stops in it's tracks. LOL

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

While the fire has been burning, I've been clearing my trails and moving some dirt. That's not even close to being done, but it's a low priority for now.

Burning trees and cleaning things up is my present priority. The best tool I have for this is my rake on the dozer. The problem I'm having with it is the teeth are over 12 inches apart, and I'm losing lots of small branches while pushing piles of trees.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

My neighbor had a rake built for a small dozer with the teeth only 6 inches apart. It does an amazing job at getting all the small stuff.

My teeth are 1 3/8 thick by 5 inches and overall, it's ten feet wide. Pretty substantial, but it could use seme improvement.

I thought about putting another tooth between the existing ones, but haven't come up with a good way to mount them to maintain the same level of strength.

Then I thought about putting wire mesh across them to catch all the branches, but changed my mind when I considered all the dirt it would hold.

My solution was to weld 5/8 rebar across the teeth to catch those branches I'm losing.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

Well, this didn't work out very well at all. As you can see in the pic, all the rebar is gone. In just a few hours, it all broke of in pieces.

I'm thinking that 160 hp, 40,000 pounds and trees that are all tangled up and being moved hundreds of feet over uneven terrain is more stress and preasure than the rebar is capable of handleing. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Next I'm thinking about welding a piece of 1 1/2 inch angle iron I have across the teeth.

Any suggestions?

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

I built a rake that ultimately wasn't up to the task of doing everything in one pass. It was plenty strong for the cleanup though. So I would suggest moving all the big stuff with the rake as is and then trying the rebar again for the clean up of the little stuff. Kind of a finish mower effect.
