Iveco / Cummins romance is over

I think most Dodge purists will sleep better after reading this:

Fiat Group (CNH) and Cummins are pulling back from their joint venture: Cummins will rule the North American continent, and Iveco will mind their own business on this side of the ocean.

This means that Cummins will rule again in the North American smaller engines plant, known as Consolidated Diesel Corporation, a joint venture between Case-IH and Cummins originating from 1980.

It was discussed on Ag Talk that this move is the end of Cummins motors in most if not all Case-IH and New Holland tractors and machinery. CNH has been using more of their own Iveco motors anyway but still this move is going to hurt Cummins as they are losing market share with all the OEM's going to their own motors. Agco has Sisu, CNH has Iveco, Deere has their own also. Then there are the others like Yanmar and Kubota who build their own motors for smaller tractors. It won't be long and Cummins will be out of the ag market here.

Cummins isn't going to be hurting to bad with Cat going out of the over the road motor business. All of their factories are working at 100%. They have no more motors to sell sold out for the rest of the year.

I agree. They are right in there with new light truck diesels emerging on the market as well. I have a Consolidated/Iveco/whatever diesel in my Case backhoe and I'd rather have the old Cummins 4BT design. Case mechanics seem to like the Cummins design better, too.

Off course they do, the old Cummins 2.9 3 cyl, 3.9 4cyl and 5.9 6cyl are half Case, half Cummins. Cummins only had medium and heavy truck engines at that time, and jointly developed the 50 to 250 hp range with Case.

The EEA cummins/iveco engines, they say, is based on the old Cummins block, with different heads and a larger bore ??? dont know exactly.

For me personally, i'm not really an Iveco fan either.
I'm too much of a purist, to see all the brands flock together. I like the diversity.

Cummins will keep selling the 8.3 for Magnum and TG use.
the 3.9 and 5.9 will be replaced by Iveco engines in Case tractors too.
McCormick are using Perkins (CAT subsidiary) engines, so Cummins just misses production for the Maxxum range of tractors.

I dont think it will hurt them, what they loose in the Ag market (McCormick using Perkins/CAT engines in the former Maxxum) they will win in the onroad market because CAT pulls back. Just a move inbetween markets for CAT and Cummins.
