Hi gang, my 1980 model 2240 tractor has been losing water slowly over the last few months.when down about half gallon it goes to hot on gauge so i fill it and continue on. I now see vapor coming from valve cover vent tube. Nothing shows in oil. Am I losing a head gasket? Just in time for hay season!

To check...drain oil and remove sump. Then pressuretest radiator and check under engine where water s leaking...check on inside of every sleeve.

Sounds to me the sleeves went .
Old preblem on those models

I'm with you on that one wet sleeves are infamous for porosity caused by electrolysis.

There's something to be said when the complete engine block is cast from one alloy as seen in many English diesel blocks, instead of the lower grade cast engine block which eventually reacts with the alloys use to manufacture the high wear resistant liner containing nickel / chrome in the alloy.

The older Chevy blocks junkyard blocks that had 010 or 020 cast into the rear of the block were always in high demand among the high performance crowd. An 010 block for instance had 10% nickel in its alloy. I've hear there are 020 blocks out there but never myself had or seen one.

If oil isn't contaminated with water then I'll suggest to get a new radiator cap. You could also check coolant pressure at engine operating temp.

thanks, I have faithfully used low silicate antifreeze to extend the engines life. When a liner is breached, does water flow into combustion chamber, and then slip past piston into sump?

Ive been aware of this issue for years and this engine has all the original guts. I will try to coax it thru hay season and may get lucky. then will have 3 months to repair. Thanks

Thanks Jim, this is easy try. still has original cap. I am looking at possibly buying a used kubota 7040 tractor to run a newer round baler, are you happy with the performance of yours?

Yes I've been happy with my M7040 but only mostly use it to handle rd bales ,pulling my disc mower & sq baler. I've never attached it to my rd baler but I may in the near future as AC compressor is out on my JD 4255
