Good Evening Everyone,

I am new to your forum, and I'm not sure how to navigate through it.

I am from Hunterdon County, New Jersey. I happen to be a widower. I have had a couple of backhoes in my past. Now I happen to have fallen in love with the one I own at present. It is a 1979 Case 580C. It's motor runs beautiful. However, I can not move it at present....that's not fun.

I have been in the insurance business since age 22.....right out of school. That was a good number of years ago. In excess of forty years. And, still working at it.

As for my Case backhoe.....I need some help.

I look forward to communicating with all of you members. I have read some of the problems that have been asked about in your forums. This is a wonderful way to help one another in need of information on how to repair our machines, and keep them running well.

It is nice to meet you all,

J J Knight

Good Evening,

I'm JJ Knight. I happen to have a 1979 Case 580C whose four speed transmission is in good shape except for being able to shift from any gear to any gear. It just so happens that the shifter itself seem to not be attached to anything or what it is suppose to be attached. It seem as though it is free as a bird flying around in the gear housing. It just so happens that I lost control of the machine due to two things. One being, trying to shift from second gear to first while going up hill. When trying to shift from second to first, keep in mind, going up hill, disengaging the clutch and taking the transmission out of second....now in neutral and now being able to get it into first.....now realizing I have no clutch OR BRAKES, I am trying to get it into any gear.....never happen. What did happen was, I can to a stop by lowering the backhoe and frontend loader. From that point on my shift lever (4 gear plus reverse) just flies around the box without, so it seems, being attached to any mechanism inside. I have been working on removing the floor plate to have access to the transmission to remove the top along with the shifter itself. I am having a problem removing the floor plate. The bolts are all rusted and do not want to cooperate with me. Any thoughts on what could be the problem within the transmission itself. I can only guess that by my trying to force the shifter into gear something either broke or disconnected. I'm trying to get an idea as to what may be the problem before I get the box to assess the damage. I hope to hear from someone who may have had a similar problem. Thanking you in advance. JJ Knight

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Downunder.

Suggest that you copy/paste your 2nd post into a new thread... go to 'home' and scroll down 'til you find, perhaps "CASE", click on it and, at the top will be "start a new thread". Then go on from there.

Enjoy the site.
