Jack Must have been one of the worlds all-time greats and yet seems to have departed this earth almost unknown. I think this is sad he should have been put on a much bigger pedestal

Wedenday morning, Paul Harvey did a nice bit on him, around five minutes or so. He too, thought that his passing would go un-noticed...He changed the world, Gary.

I have worked for TI for 17 years now. Never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Kilby but know many people who have. From what I have heard is he was a very down to earth man despite his intimidating appearance. He was a tall, large framed man. I believe he still had an office in the Kilby Center until he passed away. He could still be seen in the building from time to time.

From listening to him talk when receiving the Nobel Prize, he most likely got more spot light than he wanted. Mr. Kilby was a great man, great American, and gave us all a great gift. All the time thinking he was just doing his job as an Engineer.

Heck, if it wasn't for Jack Kilby I would not have met so many new friends on TBN. Thank you Mr. Kilby.

MF1455v,

The lack of response to this post indicates to me that Jack Kilby is far from a household name in the US. This is one of the most recognisable cultural differences that I think I have come across on all my time on TBN between America and Australia. If this man had been an Australian our nation would have stopped to honour this great man. In fact I believe he would have earned a state funeral in Australia.

I'm afraid you're right, Vin. I had not seen the link you provided; however, the Dallas Morning News recently ran what may have been the same text about him. Everything I've read about him indicates he was a pretty low key modest fellow, but was obviously one of the great inventors of this century.

Here an ABC News Person of the Week story form last week. It gives some quotes form Mr. Kilby him self. It migh give a little more insite into the man he was.

Vin, I would like to see recognition given to great inventors here in the US like Jack Kilby. But at the same time, given all the media hipe, it would probably go to someone undeserving of it. Discovery Channel has been running a show called The Greatest American. One of the canidates was Bill Gates. Look at the mess he created using Jack Kilby's chip. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
