What's the best way to eradicate Japanese Barberry. I'd rather not spray or burn. Thinking tractor with grapple? 4in1 loader bucket?
I'm loaded with it and it's getting worse every year.

I've had success with cutting the trunk or stem of the plant and spraying round-up on the cut. Do this in the afternoon when the plant is drawing fluids down into its roots. Yes it is slow and low tech but one person cutting and being followed by the spray person moves right along. I have used it for wild grapevines and girdled beech trees. Before I figured this out I tried uprooting the grapevines, pruning, cutting in half, chainsawing, used the FEL like a bulldozer, etc.. The harder I tried the more it seemed to just encourage the plant.

I did not want to use herbicides either as I figured that by spraying the plants I would get a fair amount of spray on myself or breath it. by just squirting the stems there is no problem with doing any harm except to the plant you need gone. :dance1:

This is Maine Extension service recommendation. It sounds labor intensive for a large area.

The University of Maine - Cooperative Extension Publications - Bulletin #2504, Japanese Barberry

Mechanical removal is recommended because it is effective and may cause the least disturbance. Japanese barberry is one of the first plants to leaf out in spring and is therefore easy to distinguish from other shrubs. Whole shrubs may be removed with a hoe or weed wrench. Use of thick or sturdy gloves is recommended to provide protection from the spines. Plants can resprout from roots, so remove as much of the roots as possible. Regular mowing can prevent barberry from returning once it has been removed. In areas where mechanical removal is not practical, such as rock piles or outcrops, a glyphosate herbicide can be used. Consult a licensed herbicide applicator before applying herbicides over large areas.

Cutting them down and coming behind and spraying vinigar on the cut stems. Tried everything on Bamboo and someone told me about vinigar almost 100% effective and natural.

Okay I will try the vinegar on a few this year.

Got a torch, got a tank, gotta rig up a backpack frame to carry the tank around.
We've got that stuff growing all over the place. It should start greening up soon.

Would a loader grapple be able to grip the barberry and yank it out?

I use a $900 Field Cultivator to remove wild grape vines and wild rose corms 6" underground. The Field Cultivator will pull out vines and roots 10" below grade, if adjusted to do so. Curved tines cup underground roots so they can be pulled out. Spacing between tines can be adjusted.

You can apply more pulling force to 3-Pt hitch implements than you can to any FEL.

DIRT DOG and FRED CAIN are the two brands in production.

While out of production there should be FORD, FERGUSON and BUSH HOG (brand) Field Cultivators available used.

Field Cultivator was one of the first four implements designed by Harry Ferguson to mount on the Ferguson designed Three Point Hitch.
