Hi all,
Has anyone found a deterrent for the Japanese Beetle invasion? I have six Horst Chestnut bushes that they seem to love. These bushes are around 20 -30 feet from my garden so I don't like to use to many harsh insecticides. Currently I have been going out morning and evening and shaking off all the bugs I can find into a bucket of soapy water. They seem pretty dormant at these times so this eliminates the ones I can see. Problem is these bushes are 12 - 15' tall and also 8 - 10 ' in diameter so I know I am not getting all of them.

TIA

The Bugged one

I did what you are doing and put up the bait traps. The traps are yellow to attract the bugs visually and they had a scent the bugs liked. The bugs would go to the trap and fall into a bag and die. The traps certainly killed hundreds of the bugs. Some say that the traps attract more bugs than you would get without the traps but we had so many bugs we had to do something.

Later,
Dan

I haven't seen a Japanese beetle on my property since I got a few chickens. They eat the bugs, they eat the grubs, and they turn them into delicious eggs.

Chicken will eat the Beetles? First I have heard of this and appreciate the advice.

I had tried everything on my wife's rose bushes. They were eating every leaf. I sprayed Pounce cotton poison on them and have not seen one in a week. Also rose bushes still living. Lol

Chickens will eat anything. Just be thankful you're bigger than a chicken.

Chickens LOVE them. I see VERY few since getting chickens many years ago. Also, I was told that those traps are best if you put them on your neighbors property since they really attract them. Yes, you'll get lots in your trap, but they will come from downwind and much on your plants before getting in the trap.

I pretty sure my chickens think of them as M&M's... Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside.

I would put up one of the bait bags, but I would cut the bottom off and put in through a lidded 5 gallon paint container (the ones with the spout). This way I never had to worry about emptying it. This year I did not trap, had a lot less damage. I did spray nematodes from gardens alive though.
