My son came to me and said the three point hitch wasn't raising like it should. Checked fluid level and found it overfilled. I think water got in there am going to drain now. antifreeze seems fine in radiator so I don't think it is antifreeze. tractor sets out can rain water and snow melt get in there. it is a 1967 JD 1020 gas.

When water gets into a hyd tank, it will go to the bottom.

If you drain it then befor it has a chance to be picked up by the pump you will be OK.

If it gets emulsified into a milky look fluid it is to late, and needs to be changed.

C heck for split/cracked gear shift lever boots. Also check that hyd filler breather isn't plugged with dirt.

my boots are torn and cracked. I will replace right a way. when I drain transmission housing and change the filter and Intake screen should I refill right away or let it drain overnight. what do I have to do to flush the system??

Drain overnight and add this mix.

This mixture has been used by TBN members.

1 quart atf ( type f or dex/merc 3 ) to 1g diesel, to 1 pint 90-91% rubbing alcohol. I'll put that into a sump as a rinse. if it needs more fluid for some pickup.. I'll add in some cheap utf or more diesel rinse mix.

Run it through the system and then drain and refill with your normal fluid.

Remove hoses from your cyl and drain them also.

Then keep the tractor covered.

When you say sump do you mean the transmission?? or the resevior up front by the pump. my manual says it holds roughly 10 gallons of hydro fluid do I drain it and the use enough of this mixture to fill it?? do I install new filter while doing this the replace it when the flush is done?? thanks for all your time and patience. you would not know I am a ex Farmall Plant worker that was a long time ago we closed in 1984 the odd thing now is I work for John Deere hauling parts from Milan warehouse to O'Hare to be shipped around the world.

If it is your 10 gal hyd tank that is polluted, then drain it and use the flush.

Use new filters after the flush.

A 1020 does have a tank in the front that I would drain if it has a plug on the bottom.

Screen is part key 30. Although when totally dry trans holds 10 gallons you will probably only get about 8 gallons to drain out.
