I made up a new dash panel for this tractor because I didn't want to rely on the idiot lights. In addition to the vast original gauge set I have oil pressure, temp, voltmeter and a timer for the thermostart made from an old rear window defroster relay for a mid 70s GM car so I don't have to hold the key. I replaced the puny alternator with one for an '86 or so Subaru XT - bolts on nicely and can eliminate the external reg. And, yes, this tractor was rewired. Getting back to the original post, no significant knocking sound though I wonder if the mains may be worn since the sound is more of a thud irregardless of pressure change not really a rod knock - that would be sharper. It is more pronounced around 1500-1600 RPM than any other time. I have had an unexplained coolant loss in the cold months amounting to maybe a half pint over the course of that time. No wet head gasket edge or leaking water pump or hoses. No coolant appears in the drained oil yet there is a small amount of "shaving cream" coming out the breather. When I bought the tractor it had no thermostat in it keeping it cooler than it should be. Barely got above 100F in the winter even with radiator half blocked. Heck, I could hold the muffler bare handed after several minutes of operation! Now has a 170F stat. Wouldn't be surprised if everything ties together. Probably wouldn't hurt either to go through this motor and redo it. *OUCH* the thought just hurts the wallet.
