I put some money down on a JD 1050 today at a local JD dealer.......... a 1050, 4x4, FEL, 2400 hours. A few minor leaks here & there.......but started right up this morning & it was 28 degrees or so. Seems to be in decent shape. $7200.

Anyway, the PTO was turning even when the lever said disengaged. The guy from the dealer put his boot on it when disengaged & it stopped right away. Started turning when the lever was in the on position.

I put some money down with the understanding that they'd throw a brushhog on it and test to make sure it runs the brushhog OK.

There were some previous threads about this issue - but not sure any were conclusive: Should I be concerned ?

Dealer has been reputable in previous dealings with them, and I didn't think I really needed to be there to see it actually run the brush hog. i was gonna take their word for it. But I don't want to be an idiot.

Thoughts ?

Also: any other input or advice on a 1050 would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! You will love the 1050! As long as it is minor leaks, you can usually replace hoses, etc. Pretty easy to work on most of it. My biggest complaint is replacing the battery can be a chore, with the location of the air filter.

Since 1050 has the dual stage clutch pto with no brake I'd think maybe the pto clutch "might be dragging" a little. I'd suggest to check clutch pedal free travel and just use the pto.

I have seen many of the old iron tractors where the PTO shaft turned slowly but as you noted, it can be stopped with only slight pressure. I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you can stop it with a booted foot, it is just some slight drag on the clutch and not to worry. Most of the new stuff has locks/brakes on them so they cant be turned at all when off which makes it a bit hard to hook up a shaft on something if you cant turn the equipment shaft.
