Mowing JD 135 Mower - Won't Stay Running

Hello,
I have a 2006 JD 135 Mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine. I just bought the mower used. I'm having a problem where after running it for awhile (about 1 hour) it starts revving up and down and then stalls out and has to cool down.

I'm mowing it with the deck on the hight height but I have the throttle up all the way and I push the gas about half down. If I wait about 45 minutes it will usually run about another 30 minutes or 45 and stop running again.

I've heard that you shouldn't mowe with the throttle up all the way and instead mow with it at about the half way speed but I figured the gas pedal would serve the same function while keeping the blade spinning at full speed.

This might be best posted in the Lawn and Garden forum, but maybe can help a bit. Sounds like you may need to replace the fuel filter in the line. If the fuel runs through so slow, then it starves the carb for gas. Letting it set may allow more fuel to run down. Just a guess. The fuel filter is a cartridge-like can in the fuel line.

Maybe the gas tank needs venting too. When it "changes revs" and starts stalling next time, then loosen the gas cap to see if that helps. If it does, then cleaning out the vent in the cap should help.

Also am thinking this is a hydrastatic tranny, so your foot pedal is not the gas pedal, but the forward/reverse hydrostatic pedal. But you can vary the ground speed and keep the engine rpm at mowing speed.
