14t baler
Hi-
I just joined the group and am trying to send a general call for help to anyone who might know how to install a knotter on a JD 14t baler.

I bought this 14t baler 2 years ago and have baled about 200 bales with it. One knotter works fine, the other one (the inner one) stops tying abut every 20-30 bales. It will have 5 or 6 knots tied below the knotter in a big wad. I have to cut all that out, then restring it. Usually the next 2 bales will be untied on that one side and then it resumes OK for the next 20-30 bales. I just bought a rebuilt knotter from a guy on ebay from MN who rebuilds them. I am not finding a youtube or any step by step instructions on replacing the knotter and looking for anyone who has done this who might help me get started. Thanks.

It would be better under haying forum as severa; folks there are running the 14T. Try searching that forum.

Also try asking here Forums - Red Power Magazine Community a huge knowledge base there
Another place to search and ask Antique Tractors - Yesterday's Tractors : Parts and Online Community

Also the manual for the baler should have the information you need.

Also try calling some of you Agg equipment dealers service departments and see if anyone knows. If you find one it would be worth the cost to have them go through your unit, check timing etc, which should be done when you replace knotter.

Curious if plastic, or Sisal twine is being used. Had a fellow tell me more than several years back, that plastic works best, because of a more uniform size. I have a 14T myself, but haven't used it for about 10 years. The only thing I've used it for is to make 20-25 squares to take horse camping. Haven't done that in as many years also, because life got in the way. Hope to get back to a little of both this summer, and would like to try the plastic, if that is the case. And if it is, which weight twine..??

Plastic wasn't very common when my 14T was built but was available. However, the manual explains the need to reset twine box pullout forces (10 lbs each) and twine disk clamping force (also 10 lbs) because the plastic is more slippery. Otherwise the travel up the needles and into the knot forming section can get loose and fouled up. Simple fixes but lots of religion goes with both kinds of twine. Some have gotten goofed up by using Home Depot lumber tiedown twine and round bale twine, too. Not recommended.

Sounds to me like the knife on the knotter is not cutting the twine. But it sounds like you replaced the knotter with a rebuilt one? There's not much to installing it, my recollection is you just look at how it's installed, loosen the bolts and take it out.

Do grease it before you put it in, it's easier to reach all the zerks.

I'm thinking the problems some of us were having was buying the less expensive imported sisal twine at the local places like Quality Farm & Fleet at the time. Twine not being in uniform size, would change the lbs. of pullout force, thus either pulling the twine off the knotter before making the tie, or loose as you mentioned. Around here, about all of the old guys are long retired that could set, and time a square baler, since most is now baling rounds, or the large squares. And I have no idea how the knotters on the large square balers are triggered to tie.
