I have resorted to the forum's wealth of information. Been pulling my hair out over this for over a year.

JD 170 / Peerless 800 manual transmission

Upon engaging the transmission in forward or reverse, the tractor moves as it should; however when depressing the clutch to slow or stop, the tractor keeps moving for a few seconds and eventually requires braking or shifting into neutral to keep from over-running a stopping point (either direction).

Today I pulled the seat and frame/station cover to access the area to view clutch movement, pulley engagement/disengagement, belt movement path, transmission pulley on top, etc...basically the path of belt movement from the PTO back to the transmission. Everything seems to operate properly; belt detentions when the clutch is depressed which should take away any drive or movement to the transmission. However, the tractor keeps moving slightly regardless of the clutch (pedal) position. This presents a potential danger when using in several ways, so I use the tractor as little as possible but I am at the point of needing to get this fixed so I can use the mower as needed.

Any insight or help would be appreciated.

Thank you

You might need to change the belt out for a new one.

Or look for an adjustment in need.

I expect that your tractor has a single pedal which, when depressed, first removes the drive and then applies the brake. If this is what you have then and adjustment is in order as the drive belt is not being released.
If the drive belt is worn and is riding in the bottom of the pulleys it will be difficult to get it to release as it will wedge into the bottom of the pulleys.

This machine has a separate brake / clutch. I appreciate the input from all.

The belt is (supposedly) new as I had this thing in the shop a while back (then I actually inherited the headache they left me with), but I am over dealers stealing from me. I will scrap this thing before I take it to another weasel. Engine is perfect, low hours, etc. so you can see where I am going with this (principle of the matter now).

Thank you for taking the time to respond (both posters). I'll get back to it tomorrow afternoon.

Fingers crossed.

I am looking at the belt as

I would check to see if the clutch can be adjusted and if it can I would loosen it a tiny amount, if there is no adjustment I would get a thinner belt. Ed

Easy to replace a belt with one just an inch or two too short. My neighbor replaced a mower belt by taking the old, old one that slipped to TSC where such length increments are available. "I want this one good and tight," instead of looking up the spec.

Now his blades don't fully disengage due to the layout and limit of tension/clutching adjustment, although I'm sure they will eventually ...

You stated the tractor was in the shop recently and belt replaced. Was it a Deere shop and was the belt a Deere belt? Answer to that question is significant to the thread.

To all,
Thank you for the input. I am working on the machine this evening, and will report back if and when I find the problem. Thing about this issue is it is a simple mechanism, easy to access, and view the operation (clutch depress, tension pulleys engaging/disengaging the belt, etc.). Deere shop, yes. That is what I am afraid is the issue... lol...

I may actually do a video and post it on Youtube if this does not pan out.

Back in a day or so and thank you again. Going to wrench a little

Update: nothing new... inspection, adjustments (none required). transmission evaluation, belt(s). PTO clutch,....nothing that makes me see the issue.

I did find d decent manual for the Peerless transmission in PDF that I snagged (for the document hoarders :D )

Thank you for looking and considering..... I'm still scratching my head.....
