Alright Internet, After 8 months of searching I've found lots of answers but none that seem to fit my problem. I've finally decided to just ask for help directly.
I've got a JD 2030 (71 or 72 I believe) and I can't engage the PTO while the tractor is running. I did my research and found that the 2030 came with a standard live or optional Independent PTO. Since I don't have the hydraulic PTO engage lever between the shifters I assumed I had the Live version with the two stage clutch. Note- I do have the engage/disengage lever on left side, it works just find as long as the tractor is off. if the tractor is on I can sometimes get the PTO to engage with low RPM's if there is no implement or something small like a post hole digger. tapping on the bottom of the lever while I try to engage it usually is necessary.
I bought the tractor 3 years ago for what I now know to be a guy who flips tractors on the side, great paint job, questionable internals. Never had reason to use the PTO until wife started collecting horses and now I've become a default weekend hay farmer. I figured the PTO clutch plate was just seized up after 20 years of non-use. split the tractor this weekend and found that its got a IPTO clutch plate in it (P/N: AL120023). Now i'm just baffled, the way I understand it, if i've got a IPTO then i should have either a mechanical or hydraulic PTO clutch lever somewhere....I know i don't have a hydraulic, and can't find another lever anywhere. Since I can't find it I'm left wondering if the guy I bought this tractor from installed an IPTO clutch Plate into a tractor that should have had a 2 stage clutch. Could he of installed the "wrong" 11" clutch? I've spent hours looking for someone on the forums with this same problem, can't find it. Losing my mind here. Having a great time being a weekend mechanic, but don't want to drop $500 on the wrong clutch, or reassemble everything without fixing the PTO clutch problem.
greatly appreciate the wisdom of the crowd. thanks in advance
