I have a JD 2040 with a fair amount of play in the steering wheel before it reacts at the wheels, what would cause this.

Steering arm could be loose on shaft, worn drag link tie rod ends or loose bellcrank bushings/brgs. Remove rear most inspection plug in clutch housing and check bolt for tightness.

MY 2030 has a lot of play in the steering wheel too.
I've checked the steering arm at the gear box = tight. New drag link, knuckle bushings, bellcrank bearings, and wheel bearings. The only thing left is the four tierod ends.
I think it is in the steering box itself and just their nature. As long as no hydraulic leaks, I'll live with it.

Thank you for the info, will check it out. There has always been play in the steering but no oil leaks.
