I have the opportunity to purchase ("make offer") a 1978 JD 2140 with FE loader attachment.

Tractor has probably had a rough life - been used for commercial mowing (bat-wing mower) most recently. Unknown hours.

Known problems include broken loader mount on right side, brake pedal mount broken, hi-lo shift lever loose (can pull out of tranny).

Seller say it runs fine, no smoking.

I'm thinking of offering $2000-$3000 as-is.

I'd probably need to find a new engine block due to the broken loader mounts - welding cast iron can be tricky and repair may or may not hold - do not want to compromise safety.

Does this offer sound reasonable, or should I just walk away from this one?

Can e-mail pics if that would help.

Thanks for any info.

Don't walk away, RUN away. Why buy yourself a $2000-$3000 headache. There are many good deals out there on used tractors. I would keep looking if I were you.
Just my opinion.

Yeah, I'm kind of leaning in that direction, Ken. This one would be quite a project. Even if I could get if for $2k, I'm still looking at putting about that much back into it to get it in safe useable condition.

I may try to pick up just the loader for a good price - JD brand, but not sure which model. I figure if I can get that for $1k or less, that would be a pretty good deal. Then I can find a tractor to match.

I've been looking for a used tractor with loader for a while, but trying to stay below $5k - haven't ran across anything yet (I'm in the metro Atlanta area).

I check the Heavy Equipment Trader weekly, our state Farmer's Market Bulletin, E-Bay, etc.

Does anyone have other suggestions for checking for tractors for sale (I'm in the metro Atlanta GA area).

It will just be for use around the house - not everyday farm use or anything...30-50hp range or somewhere thereabout...

Any other thoughts/suggestions are appreciated!

I would try and steer clear of 2140 through 2940 tractors. They are a whole different breed of John Deere. They are pretty dependable but they are too big to really clasified as utility tractors and too small to be ag tractors. They also have a hydraulic system that is common only to this series of tractor and repair can be pricey and parts (new) are getting increasingly hard to find.
