I am starting to compare the Deere 2210 with the Kubota 2230 both with a front loader and 54"-60" belly mower. I have owned two smaller Cub Cadet mowers, but this will be my first "at bat" in the big league world of subcompact tractors. I am getting ready to build a house on a hilly, tree filled three acre site in Nashville, TN. I've got a quote from a buddy of mine (a JD dealer) on the Deere with implements for around $12,100. The same set up on the Kubota has been verbally quoted to me at around $13,500 from a local dealer that I don't know. Is the Deere the obvious choice, or are there things about the Kubota I need to know?

If you can buy the JD 2210 new for $12,100 with FEL and 62" MMM I would grab it. That is a GREAT price, sounds too low to me. The price on the Kubota is too high.

I agree! I paid $9227 for the tractor, $1556 for the 62" MMM, $$2163 for the FEL w/53" bucket, ballast box and level indicator = $12,946 in CT. Great tractor, I'm enjoying every minute of seat time! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I don't know about the Kubota 2230, but all of the hydro Kubotas I saw had the brakes on the same side as the hydro pedals. Kubotas are a fine tractor, but, WHO WAS THE MORON WHO PUT ALL THE PEDALS ON THE SAME SIDE??? Wouldn't you have to be some kind of a circus freak to push the FWD hydro and actuate a turning brake at the same time??? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

This past spring I considered both the JD2210 and Kubota 2230 prior to selecting a Kubota B7610.

I was looking at the tractor, loader and belly mower. The best JD pricing was around $11,800 and the Kubota was a little less, around $11,500.

I went with the B7610 because of it being a bit larger than the 2230 and more comfortable for me (i'm 6'-2'). The B7610 with 352 loader, 60" belly mower and rear weight kit was just under $15,000.

If you are considering the 2230, you should definitely look at the B7510. It is less than $1000 more and has a number of improvements.

To me, the foot pedal arrangement of the 7510/7610 is better than the 2230. A of these Kubotas have the brakes on the right side along with the forward/reverse pedals. Not a big deal for me as I am not interested in ripping up my lawn by using the brakes to help steer.

I am partial to the John Deere, but have only test driven the Kubota 2230 so far.
Does anyone know what the major differences are between these two units?
Also, I am inclined to get the "bar" tires instead of the turf tires since I will have much more hill than grass to address. Does this sound like the right approach?
Also, my buddy (the JD dealer) emailed me back and said he could actually get me lower than the $12,100 he quoted me when it's time to deal. Has anyone had any success getting a comparably equipped Kubota, or other tractor, for less?

JM-You will find a ton of post comparing these two machines. RE pricing , I agree with KENSFM and FANATIC. I paid almost exactly what KENS did. 12100 is a great deal and if he will come off more, stop shopping. There are a lot of COMPACT tractors you could compare but keep in mind as you get bigger you get higher and less stable on hills. This is what factored in big for me as my land is quite hilly as well. I like the Kubota, but the Deere won out. (Priced very close here, and not a factor). Liked the loader controls and slighlty higher capacity loader. Liked the seperate foot pedals. Liked the Tach. Liked the 5 inch max mower height. Lost the cruise (No factor in hilly terrain anyway) Liked the dealer. And really, the whole shopping and comparing process is fun, but if you have a friend who is a dealer and is already taking care of you on price, this should be easy for you. Buy the Deere! You wont be disappointed!

I grew up on a farm using the brakes to assist in turning. However, my New Holland has the hydro on the same side as the brakes and I have never needed the brakes to turn with my New Holland. I also like the single pedal over the dual pedal that you get with the Deere. But that is my opinion and my opinion only.

If you like the John Deere dealer better then that is what I would go with. Dealer means so much more than color. If the Deere fits your butt better then go with it. Both tractors are good. In fact, the three big ones are all good right along with allot of the non-big three.

Again even if the John Deere was more expensive and you know and trust the dealer, that is where I would be. When I was buying I started out looking at Kubota and Deere and ended up with New Holland because I liked the dealer.

jmwest, if you have a Cub Cadet dealer in your area that handles the Cub compact tractors check out the 5234D. I just bought one with bar tires and 60" MMM which cuts very well and my lawn looks great. The 5234D has a diesel engine, 4wd, and a cat 1 hitch. I have also used a standard duty 4ft box scraper, 5ft rear blade, and dirt scoop and the tractor has performed very well. I don't have a FEL....yet. Cub makes a loader for the 5234D. My price delivered was $9700.
