JD 260 Disc mower questions

Hello all,
I purchased a used disc mower for next to nothing. It is a John Deere 260 7'10" cut. Probably mid 80's model. It was a bank repo so I didn't have the chance to get it hooked up to anything before purchasing. I need to go through it before hooking up the PTO but had a few questions and was hoping I could get a few pointers before I did.

1. Which holes do what on the transport/mow height adjustment do? The decal is almost wore off but i could see transport and mow but nothing else.

2. What kind of gear oil goes in the cutting bar? and which oil in the gear box?

3. Is the mower supposed to ride on the ground or just slightly above it? Seems the skid plates would wear out fast if it rode on the ground.

I hope to find a operators manual soon, or at least get one ordered. I need to start using this mower in the next couple of weeks.

This sounds like your first disc mower?

Sorry I can't help with the first question, as for the oil the only thing we've ever used in any mower was 90wt gear oil.

The cutter bars do in fact run on the ground. When you set the mower on the ground adjust the top link so that the leading edge is slightly lower than the rear. Also we try to lower the 3ph only until the PTO shaft is parallel to the ground.

Thanks for the info This is "my" first mower. I'm used to the NH disc mowers/conditioners in a larger size owned by my FIL. I only have 20 acres of hay ground and didn't want to worry about bringing the big equipment over.

I kinda figured 90wt but wanted to be sure. I don't want to grenade this thing right off the bat. Asking the questions because if all the pods are good I will have less than $700 in it. I would hate to have to put much more into it.

I found a picture of the decals for the transport and operate positions and have printed the parts diagrams so when I start going through this thing I can at least put it back together. The only question I have left is what oil is used in the cutter bar and gear box for sure. Best I can find is regular 90wt. I just need to be sure because on the NH mowers it is a special high temp oil. Thanks.

Anyone have experience in removing the disc hat from a JD 260 disc mower. I have used penetrating oil on the bolt. The bolt won't budge and I'm am honking on it.. Do I have to heat the bolt? It is the hat closest to the tractor. Any recommendations from someone else who has done it on how to break the bolt free would be helpful. Thanks, Rich
