I'm having the worst time getting my 261 to mow properly. It seems to always leave too much uncut grass. Sometimes the grass is tall and sometimes there are some pretty tough weeds, but it just isn't cutting right. I tried to sharpen the blades, but they are real thick and not easy to get a sharp edge on. Am I missing something? Do I need to be using these thick blades, or would the thinner, cheaper ones (with a better edge) work better? I'm pulling it with a 30 hp JD 790.

:welcome:

You can try the thinner, cheaper...but doubt that is going to be your answer. It does take some careful grinding to get and keep a good edge. But these blades don't require a knife-sharp edge either.
Early grass is tough to mow well, so sharpen and sweat it out until the later grass arrives. Also, cutting often helps a great deal too. Along with keeping rpm up, and not having wide, heavy wheels folding the grass down so the blades can't suck it up to cut it off. Lots of variables.

I have noticed that if I keep the front tire inside the previous cut line rather than outside I get a better cut. I am not however able to take full advantage
Of the deck size. The weight from the tractor pushes the grass down and I mow over it rather than cutting it. (using an x500 model).
Do you have any zert fittings on the deck?
