JD 2640 any good..?

We bought a 1978 2640 several years ago with 5000 hours on it. Our first "real" tractor. Fluid filled rear tires and 4 front weights. We put a 742 loader on it.

It will pull a 3-16 plow just fine.
I pull a gehl 2360 discbine just fine. You know its there but it doesnt push you around. Baling is no problem with a NH 273 and wagon in tow.

So far, repairs have been a new water pump, rebuilt alt and some steering parts. The water pump was loose when I bought it, fan wiggled. The steering parts I think I caused hauling rock through a plowed field with the loader.

I think its just the right size and weight for a small farm.

I have had a 2640 for 20 years and it works great on a moco andbaler. I did have an issue with brake linings plugging screens in the rear end but it is easy fix. Drain fluid pull them out clean and put them back. Not a big job and it now works fine. I had water in the hyd system when I bought it and finally got it out.

I have drove a 2440, and my 2155 which is still the same basic design and I will say they are a great tractor (IF) they have been taken care of. They require in my opinion better quality hydraulic oil in them than MF, Ford, and various other brands because as others have mentioned about the brakes coming apart. Also you need to get in a good habit of testing the coolant so you do not have electrolysis issues. They are a more noisy tractor but I feel its not because of the hydraulic pump up front but just the engine itself. I know they have a very similar basic hydraulic design and configuration on there bigger tractors and they are allot more quite. I know on my 2155 reverse in my opinion for bush hogging seems a little fast. I do not remember having this issue with the 2440 but I think it had the turtle lever next to the steering wheel. As someone else mentioned look for spraying in the hydraulic fill cap hole. I know there where also issues with a hydraulic line breaking and would need to have the tractor split into to repair. Other than that a good machine just in my opinion it requires more care than other brand tractors at that time.

We've had a couple 2240's, a couple 2355's, a 2020 and a 2630. They've all been great machines. We bought the 2630 new in 1972 along with a 10 foot disc and a 4 bottom plow. It's had the motor rebuilt but other than that she's been great. Looks can be deceiving
