78 JD 2840, 48 Ferguson TE20, Yanmar YM1700,
I have been having hydraulic problems with a JD2840(with BH 2846QT loader). The hydraulics would start heating up and then I would lose power. Shortly after that started happening, the whole system started to chatter on low idle. Changed filter, fluid, and cleaned screen...still same problems. While evaluating the front hydraulic pump, I discovered that the cooler did not have any hydraulic fluid. Any ideas on what the next move would be?

Thanks,
BCW

Hydraulics:
Type: closed center
Capacity: 12.9 gal [48.8 L]
Pump flow: 23 gpm [87.1 lpm]

Closed center pmps usually don't run all the time, they are unloaded or destroked.

It sounds like there is fluid flowing over the relief valve and heating things up.

You could install a pressure gage in one of the valves and monitor the pressure.

Your manual should tell you the standby pressure.

Check your hoses for collapsed hose.

A temp gun might help locate the heat sourcs..

Sorry to state but 2840's were not one of JD's best tractor building efforts. How is loader controlled(scv's or ind valve)?? Technically closed center hyd's requires no relief valve but a hyd function could be leaking internally causing extreme heat. Have you tested hyd functions with hyd hi-lo in both high & low speeds and with pto both on & off? Do any hyd controls seem hotter than the rest of the hyd system??

Thanks J_J! I'll check the hoses and figure some way to test the pressure. I don't have a temp gun but may be able to get one. I'm not sure what gets hot more quickly or what is the hottest. The lines around the loadrr

Thanks Tx Jim. I've heard that the 2840's had some issues..especially with the hydraulics. The loader is tee'd into the system by the filter and pressure valve. 20140721_193953.jpg20140721_194117.jpg Not sure if this is correct but I have downloaded the 2846 manual and will check it out. I've also heard that there are metal internal hydraulic lines that can crack and get things hot.

There is also fluid leaking from the top of the clutch housing. This happens once things get hot and the flow gets greater when load is applied to the loader.

Depending on type of FEL control valve that could be the problem if it's the type valve that can be converted from open center to closed center the sealing ring could be blown or relief valve not set high enough psi. You can remove return line from ported hyd filter cover, cap fitting on line to filter and aim return hose in a bucket or hyd filler hole. Crank engine and with both levers in neutral "no oil" should come out return hose. you can check stand-by psi by plugging a gauge in rear remotes. 2250 psi is correct.
