JD 3020 Diesel
Tractor was running great while brushhogging for about 2 hours then it starts to loose power. The engine is still running great but it slows to a trickle and can hardly make it up a hill. Next day same thing. Any Ideas where to start would be great. thanks

It may be starving for fuel. Check your fuel filter and the flow out of the tank for starters. Make sure your air cleaner is clean and allowing air to pass freely.

After fuel flow next is the transfer pump. If it runs better with a full tank change the fuel transfer pump. Check the crankcase for diesel fuel leaking through a failed transfer pump diaphragm.

Also check your fuel cap, the little vent can get plugged and stop fuel flow by creating a vacuum, easy to check when she starts to slow loosen or take the cap of and see how she does.

I'm alittle confused..
The RPM's STAY THE SAME but it slows down.?? THAT would indicate a transmission problem..
But if the engine slowed down.. yes, do as mentioned above..

Which type trans(SR or PS)?? If SR trans then check clutch pedal for correct free travel which IIRC should be about 1.5''. If PS trans check pressure with should be 155-165 psi. Also if PS trans it's possible damper clutch is slipping

Hello Pumpguy.....

I'm confused too. Maybe the OP will come back and clear this up for us. What the OP originally wrote was, "Tractor was running great while brushhogging for about 2 hours then it starts to loose power. The engine is still running great but it slows to a trickle and can hardly make it up a hill. Next day same thing."

To me, it depends on what the OP means by "still running great but it slows to the trickle". If it is the engine that slows to a trickle while sounding OK... that sounds like the RPMs are falling. & probably fuel and probably starvation. It's what I thought at first, too.

If on the other hand he means to be saying that the engine is running at full RPM and it is the tractor that is slowing, that's something else. Probably transmission.

The other piece of information,.... that the next day the same thing happens again..... that could go either way.
