I found a 318 with hydraulics and in pretty good shape, and a Deutz-Allis 1918. The JD already has the hydraulic valves, but is in mediocre shape. The Deutz-Allis has power steering and pump, but only one valve. They are both for sale for $2000. I am looking to build a loader for either one. Does anyone have experience with the Deutz-Allis and can give any info on it? Hydraulic pump psi? volume? Any other details. they are both hydrostatic drive, but the Deutz-Allis is a diesel. It also seems a bit larger. Which one would be best for loading, and mowing? Comments? Thanks

I had a 318, it did a graet job mowing. Also had a loader on it, Plumed hyd lines into the tractor. It did good for the size of machine.
PS. I have two hose with quick couplers that are 12' long that I don't need.

IMHO the JD 318 will probably be easier to get parts for than the Deutz. And, lets face it, any machine (JD or Deutz) that has moving parts will need to have some of those moving parts replaced someday. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The JD has built-in hydraulics but they are limited in pressure, flow, and 'tide capacity' (the ability to deal with the volume difference between retracted and extended cylinders). The JD factory loader and AFIK most 3rd party models made back when for the 318 had their own pumps and sumps.

My choice would be the DA. Same as a Simp Sunstar, so parts shouldn't be a problem. Heavy machine, limited slip rear differential, great cut - more like a manicure. A FEL, manufactured by Kwik Way (I think), was a factory offered attachment on these machines. Kwik Way probably still makes one that would fit.

Sonoma,
I owned a D/A 1920 for a few years, before I got my 445. It had a 60" deck, that ran on the ground on it's rollers, unlike the Deere decks. It seemed like a decent tractor, but the biggest difference I noticed was it had a lot of vibration. After mowing for an hour or so my feet were numb almost. Most of the vibration came from the motor, at one point a screw that holds the aircleaner on was sucked into the carb, but it didn't make it thru to the valves, thank god. Overall, the DA was a good machine, but in my opinion, they aren't quite the quality of the Deeres. The 318 was an awesome tractor, and I would bet the one you are looking at is older than the D/A, showing they hold their value better. But, the diesel would be nice to have. I am not familiar with the engine in the D/A, mine was Kohler I believe. At one point, I thought by looking at the transaxles, that they were very similar to the Deere 318 ,but now I don't think that's true, since the D/A offers a Hi/Low range in theirs. (right?)
I would guess the D/A could be heavier, It seems more in line with the Deere 420 series sizewise. They both have power steering, which with a loader is almost a must.
I guess I think for the money the 318 is better, if the D/A was 1500 or so , that might become more attractive.
Does the D/A have the 60" deck? The 318 came with a 46" or 50", so if you are mowing a few acres, that might be an issue also.
good luck
