Tractor
Case-International 385, Kubota L5450 w/LA1150A loader
This tractor is on the side of the street for sale. It looks clean except for a couple of scratches on the deck. Assuming it is in good shape, What kind of deal is it? I don't know the year model

It's the kind of deal where you walk up with 35 $100 bills in your pocket and after your test drive, lay the bills and the key on the hood to see which one the owner picks up.

I just didn't know if was a SUPER deal, not knowing what they sold for new. It's on a busy street and still there today so I take it that it is not a give-away price. Although I really don't need it, it sure is tempting.

A quick search told me that is a diesel machine. If you look at any JD garden tractor, only the top 'o class machines are offered with a diesel. The X700 w/diesel (Deere's top garden tractor right now) will cost you about $10,000.

Buy that machine if it runs!

I think new retail on the 355D approached $9000. The 355D is the last of the 300 series diesel machines and is certainly worth finding a home for.

This is a good deal in my opinion. The only concern I might have is that the engine on these machines is not the weak link. If I recall correctly they have a belt drive system (hydro) and are not as heavily made as the 400 series machines that were a step up. Sure a diesel in that tractor for that price is a great deal, but the engine literally might have four lifespans of the tractor in it, so I have always wondered whether it was truly worth doing in that particular machine. I must not have been the only one, as that machine was discontinued when JD rebadged to the 500 series the older 300 series machines, and they were hard to find even before that. That said, it is still a good deal in my mind.

the specs say the engine is an aluminum V-twin. Do these engines have the life expectancy of a conventional diesel? There must be a trade-off somewhere. Thanks for your reply

Sounds like a great deal to me but I'm not familar with this machine. Here's a link that might help you decide for yourself.
