I am contemplating buying a "like new" I'm told, 380 blade for my JD 955. It comes with everything including the manual. Fellow even said if I bring the tractor we would put it on, but he's two hrs. away so I'll do it myself if I buy it. My question is, will I be sorry that it is a 54" blade and not bigger as some are? I will probably use it just in the winter for snow removal. Also will the hardware for the 70A loader get in the way of mounting the hardware for the blade? And what do you all think about the price, 1150.00?

First, That price is WAY high I think...It may be "like new" but it is still at least 10 years old. I paid $350 for mine 3 years ago!

You will also need it wider than 54"-That is only 48" wide when angled and I think your tractor is wider than that. I use the 60" on my machine (20 HP, 48" wide) and it runs it perfectly. JD has extensions you can get to bolt on the top and sides or they can be made easily.

All of the mounting hardware for your loader needs to be removed, then the mountings for the blade installed. This blade is NOT like the newer quick-attach models. It is a real PITA and that is why this blade is "like new" I bet!

I have some pictures in the Picassa link in my sig, in the folder called "plow pics"

Also, HERE is another thread to read...you can also search "380" and "390" for some others.

I agree, price sounds way too high. Unfortunately, these blades are a good example of how often times what something costs when new has no reflection on its used market value after a few years. I sold a very clean, excellent condition 60" #375 blade last year that I had purchased for $150 ( ebay) and sold it for $350. The #375 was designed for the 750 series tractor but is very similar to the #380. They have different mounting brackets and the #375 has an extended frame that runs to the rear end. The front ends of the plows are identical from the pivot forward. They are very heavy/ well made and designed to have extended wings bolted on to the sides of the blade if you need extra width. They are no fun to swap off/on as kennyD mentioned. It seems to me like the ones I have seen are either pretty beat up looking because they were left on the tractor all the time and subsequently used for years of pushing snow, dirt and gravel too...which is fine, they'll hold up to it. Or they look really nice because as Kenny said, they were used one or two seasons then left in the corner of the garage when the owner decided it was much more simple to just use the old rear blade/sore neck method.

Summation: Great blade, very well made, hard to mount/dismount and $1150 is more or less twice what I have regularly seen them sell for on Ebay and Craigslist.

Very ditto on all before. Nice blade, built strong, but definitely not worth the trouble if you also use a loader. That will cause it to end up sitting in the corner unused, as shown in my picture on the link Kennyd provided.

I could also add that the tractor front bracket required for the 380 blocks removal of the grille. Not a problem for my 755, but the 955 has the battery behind there. It is no quick process to remove the bracket if you need to get to the battery, even if you just want to look at it to check for corrosion.

Thanks fellows. I have decided against buying the blade. I was all set to go and get it then decided to do some searching. My neigbor has one on his 955 but he doesn't have the loader so for him it is no problem. Also, I'm not sure what width his is but the one I was going to get was 54" and I thought that was a bit to small. At times, I use my loader quite often so that would have been a real pain too. Thanks again all.
