My old JD 400 backhoe/loader stopped running and was not getting any fuel to the engine. I removed the electric fuel shut off solenoid and it was dead -- no movement of the valve to let fuel in. I checked the solenoid with an ohm meter and it is open. No fuel to the engine. I jammed a piece of wire into the opening to keep the valve open so I could get it back to my shop and am wondering if that valve really needs to be there for the unit to operate properly. Might it be there for safety purposes only to shut off fuel when the key is off? Could I get it to operate OK if I forced the electric valve to be open at all times and put a mechanical fuel shut off next to the fuel pump? Any help will be appreciated.
