Ok after weeks of looking I found it's nearbout impossible to find a relatively low hour 40 hp compact JD that either hasn't been worked to near death, or is less than 20 years old, or that doesn't have an asking price near what you can buy a new tractor of another color. So my purchase plan has changed. With all the purchase incentives and 0% finance being offered, I'm looking new for now.

I want a cab and PowrReverser (shuttle) as I prefer geared machines but want the convenience of forward/ reverse shuttle for the minimum front brush cutter work I plan to do. The 4044 series looks to be the right series but the PowrReverser isn't offered in the cab version according to the Build your own page on Deere's website. The Massey Ferguson 1740M, very compelling features at price point, does but the dealer is 2 hours away. The Deere dealer is less than 15 minutes away.

So am I missing something and the 4044 can be optioned with the cab and the PowrReverser transmission?

I'm not sure. But did you try a different HP version? The 4R models are the same frame size from 44-66 HP.

You will need the 4R for the cab. No M's available with cab from factory.

Thanks.

After test driving a 4044R Cab Hydro I decided I preferred the Hydro. Ended up finalizing the deal on the one I tested.

ETA on delivery isn't set yet as they have to install extra functions.

I am adding in a reply so that somebody searching for this question will have it answered.

All 4 series cabbed machines are 4Rs with hydrostatic transmissions only. There are no cabs on any 4M tractor and all cabbed machines are hydrostatic only. Other makers I am familiar with other than Iseki/MF don't offer a hydraulic reverser with a cabbed compact tractor either. CaseIH/New Holland/LS offer 45/50/55 hp machines with a gear transmission and a cab, but it is a mechanically synchronized reverser and not a hydraulic one such as Deere uses. Ditto with Kioti's cabbed NX series, 45/50/55 hp with a mechanically synchronized reverser. Kubota offers the MX5400 with a cab and a mechanically synchronized reverser as well.

Deere's smallest machine with a cab and any geared transmission (PowerReverser or otherwise) is the 5055E. That's a lot more tractor than a 4044R although the list price is fairly similar.

Your last paragraph implies the only difference between the these two is the 5055E is a lot more tractor. Yes larger size and the exact hp difference not sure but that is certainly not the only differences. When I looked at the 4000 series tractor JD earlier this year seems it had it's advantages also.

There are a lot of differences between a 5055E and a 4044R. The 5055E is a utility tractor and a 4044R is a compact and have a different range of intended uses, with some overlap. But, the biggest difference is that the 5055E is a lot larger. Sit on one and then sit on a 4 series tractor. The loader on the MFWD 5055E can lift close to 1000 more pounds, the 3 point is a category II with about 1000 pounds more lift, the tractor weighs about 2500 pounds more, the tractor itself is a foot longer and about a foot and a half taller, and you can only get a gear transmission on a 5E. Turning radius is about 50% more on the 5055E MFWD than the 4044R. The 5055E is notably more powerful, testing at at 51 PTO HP which is nearly identical to what the cabbed 4066R makes. Tires, particularly front ag tires, are a lot larger on the 5055E. You also can't get any 5 series tractor with a hydrostatic transmission, they are all gear drive. The engine in the 5E is a lot larger at 2.9 L, it is a John Deere-made turbo three cylinder. The 4044M uses a naturally aspirated 2.2 L four-cylinder Yanmar. You can get a completely mechanical transmission in the 5E with the 9 speed TSS, you can't in any 4 series machine. The simpler 5Es, particularly the 2wd versions, are noticeably less expensive than 4 series machines.

One of the reasons I stopped considering the 5 series tractors.

I too would have wanted a Power Reverser trans. I am glad you like the hydro trans.
