Hi all. This is my first post here, but have found a ton of great information throughout TBN.
I'm having a problem with my 1998 4100 gear transmission. I was brush hogging, put tractor into reverse, backed up a little. Put tractor in forward low and as soon as it started going it made a sound like belts slipping badly and bogged the engine. I immediately depressed the clutch and kept it running. Moved the range selector back to reverse and it worked fine. Tried a forward range again and it immediately bogged the engine down.
I checked for sticks or anything that could be jammed in linkages, found none. Gears 1-4 work fine. Range selector moves and sounds fine. But I've determined that something (shift fork, shift fork rod, or associated pins) are broken and keeping it in reverse. Stays in reverse when placed in neutral as well.
Now where I need your help is accessing the appropriate area to fix this problem. Do I have to split the transmission to access the range shift forks or are they accessible through the side plate that holds the gear and range selector?
Thank you in advance guys. I don't have a technical service manual, but hopefully will soon.
