I have been looking into SCUT's and CUT's for the last year or so and have come to the conclusion that a new tractor is more than I can afford. As a result I have been concentrating my efforts on searching for a used one. I found a JD 4100 locally. It has 130 hours and is outfitted with a 410 FEL and a 60" 7-Iron MMM. The dealer is asking $12k. I would like input as to whether this is a fair price. I currently mow with a JD 277 which I would probably trade in. I would rate the condition of both to be good to very good.

I will primarily use the tractor for mowing and bucket work. However, I would like to get a core aerator and a tiller (JD 647).

I would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks in advance.

You also need to know whether it has the hydro or manual transmission. When new those tractors were worth about $2K more with hydro. Since the loader was worth about $2K new you can figure you'd be paying about $10K for the tractor. When new that tractor would regularly go on sale for about $10.5K with manual tranny and about $12.5K with hydro. It doesn't have many hours on it so I'd perhaps be willing to pay $8K with manual tranny and $10K with hydro for the just the tractor and perhaps $1000 more with the loader.

How much acreage are you planning to mow with the 4100? I have a 4200 and it's a real workhorse, and although I only have about 450 hours on it, I lost count of how many tons of rock and dirt I've moved with mine.

If you intend to do a lot of loader work, the hydro tranny makes that a lot easier.

As for pricing, I have no idea whether the dealer is asking a fair price or not; but 130-hours is low mileage.

I can't comment on the price to much, but it does seem a touch high if no other implements are included...

Things I would expect for this price are:

-No sun fade or rust
-Owners manuals for the tractor, loader and mower included
-Ballast box included
-Maintenance records

Also, as others have mentioned, make sure it has a Hydrostatic transmission. While you are researching, also check prices on the 4110, as it is essentially the same machine with different sheet-metal.

I have a 4110-basically an updated model on the 4100, and it has been a great machine. No major problems, plenty of power for it's size, and very comfortable to operate.

Yes, it is the Hydro model. It also has turf tires that I would say are about 50% tread. I mow about 1.5 acres. The story that I have been told is that the previous owner used it for snow removal and mowing. The unit does have some rust on it because of the road salt used in this area. I need to ask about the manuals and service records though. Thank you for all the replies.

For 130 hrs the tires should be in fairly good shape. I would not expect 50% tread but over 90%. I have sold a similar hr turf tire kubota with minimal wera at 180 hours.

The 4100 will handle 1.5 acres with ease; but like Nik has said, the tires should be in much better shape than what you describe.

I've a 4010, near the same machine but without a separate hydraulic pump on the power steering (think this and 2 more hp are the main differences). I've over 300 hours on mine, and the tires have very little wear, and there's no rust (2004 model).

Mine has hauled 22 tons of gravel, gobs of mulch, shredded loads of leaves and limbs and done a fair amount of brush hogging. It's a great machine. No problems at all so far other that knocked up signal lights on the ROPS (moved inside; no problem since). The FEL has developed a very slight leak down.

I'd offer 1 to 2k$ less and see what they say.

I had a 4100 for 6 years and I pretty much agree with most of what has been said sofar. I would offer $10k max if it is a Hydro and in good contition., but it all depends on the amount of hours it was used.
