John Deere 4400 hydro, loader, chipper, tiller, bush hog, blade, rake
I am looking for a replacement for my JD425 garden tractor. I started looking at a 455. While at a dealer Friday looking at a 455 they had a 4100 setting close by. I decides to drive it and drove it next to the 455. The 4100 is a little larger and costs more, but it is a real tractor with 3 pt, hydraulic outlets, PTO & 4WD. If the 3 pt & pto are added to the 455 the cost difference is not that great & you are still limited to the attachments that can be used. I mowe about 3 acres. I do own a JD4400 with loader & backhoe, but it is to big for the areas I mow. Anyone else moved from a garden tractor to a 4100 or similar size tractor for mowing. Chris

I did i had a jd 425 and i traded it in for a 4100. I like it much better it has alot of power for a little tractor.I moved to a place where i just didnt need to mow a yard, so i got a rotary cutter and a loader with the 4100.If you decide to get one i would say get the hydrostatic it a good thing. I, too, have a 4100 with HST, belly mower, tiller, and front blade. It's an outstanding little tractor. I use it to mow about 7 acres of lawn, plowing snow in the winter, and rototilling garden areas. Don't think I could live without it. It turned out to be too small, however, for pasture maintenance, so I bought a 5400 with a 709 rotary cutter. I miss the hydrostatic when I run the 5400, though it does have the power reverser. HST is great for varying speed while keeping the PTO speed up. Also, when you take your foot off, it stops quickly. The 4100 is just right for many jobs and I wouldn't part with it.

I also have a JD4100 (moved up from a Cub Cadet Garden tractor). I absolutely love this little tractor for mowing. The Hydro trans. combined with power steering m akes mowing a breeze. It actually turns sharper with the 54"mower than my little Cub Cadet with a 38' deck. I have also have and have used a rear blade and loader and find the machine works fine. Of course, with the small bucket it takes longer to move a given amount of dirt than with a larger one.
