Hello All,

I am looking at a 1983 John Deere 410B. It has 5k hours. Current owner(a friend) has had it for 10 yrs for snow removal and a few stump pulls. It has had very little use the last 10 yrs. Prior to that it was used for snow removal for a Nursing home. I tested the machine and it started right up from not being used in a month. It is very tight at both ends. Very little digging or banging around. The one issue he mentioned is the blow by. In my research, I understand some blow by is to be expected on older machines, but is this excessive? It does go away a little after a using for a bit. I plan to have a my mechanic do a compression check but thought it would be good to post to this group for thoughts experience.

I plan on using it for stump and rock pulls on my property, not everyday use.

The price is low from what I've seen in the market, 6k. Hoping to use and potentially sell for similar price.

Thanks for any input.

A little more info.. The machine has done this for the 10 yrs he has had it and says it hasn't affected power, idling or performance.

Buy it...won't find one cheaper and will possibly profit when you are done with it. It is almost unbelievable that the hoe isn't full of slop and the pins are "tight front and back". The current owner is a friend as well, this is a no brainer.

I know this might seem stupid but Im a simple person. When is the last time the air filters have been changed. I had one the other day with blow by. Ran fine. Checked the filters and they were the worst I have ever seen. Changed them and not only did it run better but the blow by went away.

How much oil does it use And is much crankcase pressure build up? That may give an idea of the seriousness of the blow by.
