JD 420 garden tractor
I'm new to this forum and also new to JD tractors. I bought a JD 420 garden tractor over a year ago and really enjoy cutting grass with the machine because it saves so much time over the JD 165 that I have. Now I'm considering adding a snow blower to this tractor but I have no idea what I need to run it. My tractor came with a 60 inch deck and snow blade but I would like to have a blower in place of the blade. What other things do I need to add to this tractor in order to make a blower work? Thanks.

The 420 is a very nice model - does yours have the Onan engine? or Kohler?
The tractor was available with many optional setups - up to three auxiliary hydraulic circuits with valves, front and/or rear ptos, rear 3-point hitch, etc. etc. The parts you'll need to add a snowblower will depend on how your 420 is configured. Maybe best to find an experienced dealer who can look at your tractor and tell you what the possibilities were and what parts to look for now. I did some work on a friend's 420 - one thing I noticed was that being air-cooled there is a plastic bottom cover that directs the air flow and prevents grass clippings from getting up into the engine's cooling fins. More than one JD garden tractor has been overheated and hurt by this cover being missing or damaged - an important item. Good luck - and take care, Dick B

I'm not sure how this works but I hope this leads to the pictures I just took of my 420. It does need a new spring for the belt tension on the 60 inch deck. Maybe from these pictures you can see what I have?
The only problem that I can see with this tractor is after it starts it will run for a while and then start to kill and finally die after backfiring through the exhaust. After this happens once or twice it will continue to run for as long as I need it. I already put in a new fuel pump but that didn't help. Got any ideas?

I already passed up a tiller because I can't find a 2000 rpm rear PTO for this tractor. I know there have been some on ebay in the past but I havn't seen one since I've been seriously looking. I would like to buy a tiller eventually. I should take a picture of the blade I have for this. It's hand made and built like a bulldozer blade. :))))) Someone knew what they were doing.

Looks like you have the rear 3 point hitch kit and two extra sets of hydraulics at the front in addition to the hydraulic up/down of the deck. On the misfire, how long does it run at first - seconds (choke issue) or minutes (maybe valves need adjustment) Hope more people who know about this rig will chime in.

Don't forget to empty the fuel tank and check for anything that might be blocking the outlet from the tank - something blocking the outlet from being pulled down by the fuel flow. Another item frequently overlooked is the fuel filter - install a new one and be done with it. Lastly, try adding fuel treatment in case you have stale gas in there (from whatever source).

I have had all the above and more affecting my rider mower - your machine could be equally affected. Check the carb adjustments and also prove that the fuel pump is working properly.
