I've found a JD 4200 with 50 hrs on it for $7500. It is 4WD HST model and has a mid-PTO, and appears to be in good condition.

Currently I don't know the year but these were made between 1998 and 2001, I think. I've learned I can get the year if I know the serial #.

I just need to bush hog 10 acres a couple of times a year and keep up 1/3 mi. of road, plus some misc. tasks, so I don't need much of a tractor and definitely want to go used and stay under $10,000.

I have looked at this one and it appears to be in good condition and runs fine.

Nothing comes with it. (no MMM, loader, etc).

Is this a reasonable deal and a reasonable match for my needs?

Seems reasonable to me......I looked at one a year ago with a loader and a backhoe for about $ 16,000.00. If this unit is bare with a mid PTO it seems in line. Offer lower and work up.....maybe their price is set a little high.

I think its a GREAT deal if there is nothing wrong with it.
Be wary: Maybe too good a deal.

Only complaints I've ever read about the 4200 is they're a bit weak on power considering the size.
Power wise, it's pretty close to the 790 (I think the 790 has 1 or 2 more HP at the PTO, but that's negligible).
Price sounds good. You'll want a 5' cutter behind the tractor (might sneak by with a 6' unit, but you'll have to slow down for the thicker brush). If your 10 acres is pretty clear of bigger obstacles (trees and such), I suggest you look into a pull behind cutter rather then the 3PH type. Pull-behinds require less HP, so you can get a bigger cutter.
For your road maintenance, you'll probably want to add a loader. That'll add close to $3K. The 4200 took the 420 Deere loader, but you might get away with the 430 (if you bought a new Deere loader, you'd want the 300 or 300x).

If you're seriously interested in that machine, don't hesitate too long or someone will buy it out from under you.

BTW, that's really low hours for a 5 or more year old tractor. Why is that? (my guess was this machine was a 2nd tractor (owner has another, larger tractor) for some tasks and just wasn't used much...that's what my used 790 was (24 hours when I bought it))

Bought my 2001 4200 last year. I've put a little over 100 hours on it. No complaints. I only use it for loader work. It came with a loader and belly mower, I've never used the mower. Sounds like a good price. Check the oil cooler behind the battery, make sure it's not being eaten away. Mine had a little damage to the fins that I fixed.

Thanks all. I did take the plunge based on everyone's advice. Now I just need some implements...

My father in law has a 4200, I used it for brushogging with a 5' Deere brushog and found it to be quite underpowered. I was just cutting field grass. That is why the 4300 was so popular because you got the 430 loader, bigger tires and a 32 hp instead of 26 or 27. I love my 4300 but you got a good price. The only way you can run a 6' hog is if you are mowing your lawn with it.
