Hello Everyone.

I have been prowling around here for about a month now soaking up all the tractor stuff. Heres my situation.

I have 4 acres, 2 cleared so far, will eventually have at least 1.5 of the other cleared in the next few months. I checked with my closest JD dealer today, and they have a 2000 model 4200 with a mid mount mower for $8500. It only has 577 hrs on it. It looks hardly used, the pto and arms don't even have scratches on them. May need some touch up pain here and there, but other wise it is nice.

First off, is this a good price for this model. I looked at a new 2305, but I liked the size of the 4200 better, I am a pretty good sized boy.

Second Question, I will mainly be mowing with this tractor, is it what I need? I may add a loader in the future, but can get by without it now. I will be getting a box blade, buying seperatly from the dealer.

I would appreciate any thoughts, good and bad on this situation.

Thanks

I'm assuming this tractor has MFWD...price is really good for a MFWD 4200.

For $8500, I'd definitely go for it...good price for a nice tractor. The only bad thing I've read about the 4200 is they're underpowered for their size. Of course, underpowered depends on your tasks, and if you're using it mostly for mowing, you should have no problems.

Even if it's 2WD, it'll be fine for mowing and most other tasks.

If you're seriously considering that tractor, I wouldn't wait too long...I'm sure it'll sell quickly.

Roy hit some good points.

Some things to check.

How much to add a loader? Does it already have a DSCV (joystick) ? Get the price on that. It is very possible that you would be far better off selling it and buying a loader equipped machine rather than adding one. Probably that is why it is there in the first place. The 4200 is likely very limited in loader options now. I am not even certain that any of the current loaders fit it, (I will try to check...)

Check http://www.machinefinder.com for similar deals. Be sure to look at 4200/4300/4400 and 4210/4310/4410s. If your a deluxe sized guy; ou will likely be happier with a 43xx or 44xx. But, as Roy said, you can get along with a 4200 for sure...

Finally, try and get a commitment on some reasonable time to trade back if it isn't big enough. More than one friend in the dealer network has told me that no other machine in the Deere lineup compares with the 42xx CUTs for owner frustration - due to its being underpowered. YMMV.

Oh, and it does help to know the machines configuration.

2WD or MFWD?

Collar shift or HST?

DSCV? 3rd valve (usually used to raise the mower)?

Tires.

I assume you realize the mid mower is a finsh mower and NOT a bush hog...
