Like so many others, I'm beginning to get onto the generator bandwagon. I have a JD 4210 e-Hydro, and wonder if it will be ok to run a 13KW PTO generator, and will it be ok to run it for hours at a time? The Northern Tool generator requires 24HP, I think the 4210 has 27HP gross and possibly 22Hp at the PTO.

I like the idea of PTO type generator, as not having yet another motor to start occassionally, treat the fuel, etc, etc.

TIA

my problem of going between PTO gen and regular gen. is when i loose power, it is in middle of winter and trees down due to ice, or lots and lots of snow that needs to be removed. or i am some place on the farm working a project, were i want to use some power tools, or something. and most of these projects end up, needing the tractor to move things around. vs trying to man handle a few hundred pounds of material here there and all over the place.

with above noted. just having a regular gen, that i can place on a pallet and use pallet forks on 3pt hitch or pallet forks on the FEL to move around. tends to make life easier for me.

now if you had a 2 or more tractors, and you were wanting to place the PTO gen on spare tractor that really did not do much. then PTO gen to me would make sense. if the wife, can figure out how to hook PTO gen up to tractor, and then start and move tractor ok, but at 13K Watt gen, you are getting into whole house size generators, and having a proper transfer switch installed and cable between were tractor could be parked with gen on it. might be an issue.

You will be OK if you keep the load less than 13KW. If you start taxing your tractor you will start to lose frequency and voltage; just like a real power plant.

It will be fine. I have a Winpower 30KW/50KW that I run with my 3320. This generator has been in the family for 30 years and it was used to power a farm and trucking company. I know I can only produce 12-13KW with the PTO HP of the 3320 but the tractor powers my complete house including central air and oven along with my 40x60 finished pole barn. Tractor doesn't labor much with everything on. My only issue is fuel supply. If faced with an extended outage you will go through fuel running the tractor at PTO speed. I usually keep 50-100 gallons in a bulk tank on site.

I ran one with my old 855. I lost power last summer. Had to unplug a couple grain bin fans cause when I turned the air, tv and lights on in the house it started pulling the tractor down. I couldn't keep the rpms up enough. Once I unplugged the two 1 horse fans it ran it fine.

Thanks for the info! I was a little concerned with not only the 4210 being enough tractor, but any issues with running it for an extended period. Looks like neither should be a problem.
