Good afternoon,

I have a 2001 JD 425 tractor with about 530 hours on it. Late last summer after about an hour of cutting, the engine would sputter as if it was running out of fuel. I noticed that the fuel pump was not running so I checked the fuses and they appear to be okay. As it was a hot day I left the tractor in the field and returned a couple of hours later and was able to hear the fuel pump running when I turned the key and sure enough the tractor started right up and I was able to finish my cutting. I repeated this scenario several times for the remainder of the summer and in the winter months when plowing, I never had the problem. Today is about the fourth time this year I have used the tractor for cutting grass and again it sputtered to a halt.

I have looked online for a resolution, but the problems some folks report, do not seem to match the issue I am having, and unfortunately I am not in a good position at the moment to throw a lot of money into solving the problem.

Thank you,

Fred

My Brother borrowed my old JD455 once and it did that to him. He called me. I had no clue. Found out it was the fuel filter. Maybe you can be so lucky??

I had this problem years back. It was the ignition module. Once it got hot, it started to make the tractor sputter and eventually stop. However, I do not know if this module controls the fuel pump, and don't recall making any connection between fuel pump running or not and my problem. Could just be the fuel pump.

Take the fuel pump out and see if item 14 tube is not bad. This will cause it to stop after mowing a while. Just a short section of gas hose with two clamps. They are bad to deteriorate from Ethanol in the fuel.

My fuel pump has give me fits last year with the wires not making good connections up top at the disconnect point.
I would take it all apart, put it back together and it would work OK. Later same problem.
I finally cleaned/secured all the connections and all seems OK now.
These fuel pumps are expensive but rarely fail.

My lx277 was acting strange Sat, dying at weird times.

Turns out the fuel line had small cracks (just before the fuel pump) that when the hose flexed (like turning) starved the engine. Like above post, simple fix.

I had a pesky different problem a week ago (from mowing in the woods...) which also turned out to be a simple fix. But something I read that was of great help in tracking down problems (like pto not engaging) is on the electronic module the meaning of the red and green lights....

Helps troubleshooting.
