JD 4300
I would appreciate any insight you guys could offer about a problem I am having on a new to me JD 4300 2WD HST. It has 1,600 hours on it. When I picked it up I check operation in A,B,and C ranges and did not notice any issues at first. I also used the main brake and hit the FWD pedal at the same time to see if the tractor would stall and it did. Looking back now at the end of the test drive the left wheel was not turning well and I had to use the diff lock a good bit.

As of now the left wheel does not turn unless the diff lock is engaged and even then you can tell it is having a hard time.

I have tried a few things to troubleshoot and narrow down the issue. I jacked the rear up and ran the tractor on jacks thinking that both wheels should turn if they are off the ground.

1. On the jack in A only the right wheel turns. I pushed the right tire brake, the left never tried to turn, and the tractor would have stalled if I did not release the brake.

2. On the jack in neutral. Right wheel turns by hand but very very difficult to move. I cannot rotate the left wheel by hand at all.

3. On the jack in A using diff lock both tires will move but the left seems to drag.

Other things I have tried or noticed.
1. The right side does not have a return spring on the brake tab going into the axle housing. The left side has a spring but it is connected to the ROPS bolt on the axle, that does not seem correct.
2. Pressing the left side brake the linkage under the tractor does not move.
3. Pressing the right side brake the linkage moves to engage the brake and then moves back when the pedal is released.
4. I cannot get the left side brake to move (rotate) at all under the tractor either to engage or to disengage. I have put penetrating oil on both the left and right sides to see if they will free up.

Questions

1. In my reading here I was leaning towards something being stuck or jammed on the brakes. What else would cause a wheel not to rotate?
2. How much does the brake lever have to move to engage the brakes. The right side only move maybe a 1/4" when the brake is pressed, but that seems to engage the brakes. That seems like very little movement though.
3. If it really is a stuck brake which I am leaning towards how do you get it unstuck?
4. What do the brake return springs connect to?

Again I appreciate all the help or suggestions you can provide.

the shafts that go into the housing sieze get some good penetrating oil and spray and take a hammer and move the bracket that attaches to the brake pedals back and forth till they operate freely soak them for a couple days a little at a time while your at it do the shaft for diff lock and range selector also spray the linkage for draft arm valve they also sieze and brak the roll pin

I was able to look at it more tonight. The left brake was the issue it took a good bit of penetrating oil and a pipe wrench but I was able to move it. It still is does not freely move but the wheel turns now. I will continue to work on it to free it up. I need to look and the whole linkage because depressing the left brake pedal does not move the linkage. I will also take a look at the range selector and the diff lock.

What is the draft arm though and where is it located?

the control for the 3 point , lever on right side of the seat goes thru some supports [ spray them ] under the seat and the valve body is under the seat to the left side of the tractor same problem as brake shafts steel shaft alum housing miner corrosion builds up after years need to work penetrating oil past an o ring -if you look at deere parts breakdown you will see what im talking about its a common problem with these older tractors - kind of maintence also pull the fuses and relays and take a air compressor blow gun and blow thru the pins the put dialectric grease on the fuses / relays dead grass builds up on the back of the fuse box - dead grass is corrosive - only other thing is grease the pedal linkage for the hydro drive there is a grease fitting down there that gets over locked a lot - once you get all the linkages free and properly lubed it will be like a new tractor -it will last for many years enjoy
