I love my JD 4300 almost as much as my wife. Just one thing: the design for the exit of the engine exhaust pipe (forward left axle) causes fumes to be directed right into my face while operating. Surely I'm not the only one bothered by this.

I wish JD had a "what were we ever thinking" retro exhaust pipe that leads the fumes down and under. Failing this, I'm thinking of getting some flex-pipe from the autoparts store and extending the existing pipe to get the fumes out of my face.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

TIA!

Welcome to the forum.
I have the JD 4300 since 1999 and can't recall that I ever had the exhaust fumes 'blow back' to my face, and if so, not so that I thought anything about it.

What am I missing /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mine exits down and in front of the front axle, and no where near my face. Possibly a short extension added would help. Seems that I recall someone doing that with their tractor, but don't recall if it was the Deere 4300.

Depending on where you're using it and the overhead clearance, consider the vertical exhaust kit. I put one on my 4310 this year and it eliminated the "hot left foot" issue in addition to getting the fumes away from the operator. I had to do some trimming of trees with low branches, but other than that I really like it.

dmp437, can you post a picture? I would love to see that!

I have the same problem with my 990. It isn't severe, but I do get more exhaust than I think I would with a vertical exhaust stack (I got my machine a year or so after they changed from vertical to under-hood). The worst is when you get off to shovel something into the bucket or hook up some chains or something. You get exhaust blowing almost directly in your face.

I checked into replacing the under-hood exhaust with the vertical one from the older style 990, but things have slightly changed all the way back to the cylinder heads so the old pipe isn't a direct fit. I will probably build one myself someday but for now I'm just living with it.

My 4310 does the same! Esp. if i'm mowing grass that's much taller than my ankle (read: all of it) and when i'm travelling at any speed above a crawl. I think i might invite the neighbor/welder over to maybe add something on - at least point it toward the back or somewhere.

Same here on my 4210. My old Ford had a vertical stack, was always knocking it off with tree limbs. Not sure which is worst, but the fumes are starting to get to me. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
