Hello

I have a JD 4300 which doesnt get used much. Problem is the hydraulic screen keeps getting clogged with a grayish sludge. This has happened a half dozen times. I bought new fluid screen and filter. Will change it all. But i have done this before and it didnt help anyone know what this stuff is and why its there. It is not metal particles its a softer sludge. The magnatized drain plug never had any metal particles on it.

Thanks for help

Six times huh?

Assuming you are using the correct Hy-Gard fluid, the only thing I can think of is that would be inside the system and is gray and non-magnetic would be Al particles. Do you have any pics?

What type of transmission? Do you have a loader? Any other hydraulic attachments? What is the tractor used for? Where is it stored? Any weird vibrations for noise?

How thoroughly did you flush the case after the previous clogs?

Not sure if this would be helpful, but you may be able to identify by putting some of the sludge through coffee filters with help from a solvent (acetone or lacquer thinner, etc). Eventually the solids will separate from the oil.

More info shed on this problem in the other thread of the same OP question/dilema.

How does the oil look when you drain it? Is it clear and or the original color or is it also discolored? Any noticeable strange odor to the oil when drained out.

Long shot but if very infrequent usage in high humidity environment could the oil be getting mold growth like some coolants do if they sit to long from moisture entrained in the oil?
