4310 JD 2003
I ordered an MX-5 mower back in June from my JD dealer. It was originally promised by 8/1,then 8/20 ,now he say after Deer season. My questions are, Does anyone cut with a 4310 using an MX-6 mower, and how well does it work? Is the MX-6 mower too big for the tractor?I bought the Mx-5 based on the dealers recommendation. HELP!!!!!!!!!!

I did a search on your tractor and came up with this thread !http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/reviews/reviews.pl/reviews/186

The MX6 maybe a little too much for a 4310 unless what you mow isn't too tall or hilly. The MX6 weighs 1,053 lbs and the MX5 823#. The LX6 weighs 635# and the LX5 520#.
The 4310 will lift it with no problem but the hp is probably low on the 4310. The MX6 is recommended for the 4510 (39hp) and larger tractors. I have a Kubota 3710 (37hp) and a 6' bush hog mower similar to the MX6 and have no complaints but I don't mow real tall grass. I did mow down some 5-6' cedar trees recently and that was a chore for the mower and tractor.

Thanks for your help.
I visited a different JD dealer here in Illinois. He indicated there were 5-6 MX5's listed as available from other dealers in Wisconsin. I'm having the original dealer call them regarding current availibility.

I didn't think the 4310 was big enough, but wishful thinking.

Thanks again

I have mowed quite abit with a JD4310. I would think a 5' mower is about all that you would want to put on this tractor. However, if you are mowing short grass, it will probably be alright. I mowed 3 acres this morning of 3' to 5' (maybe 6' in places) tall grass with a 5' mower and it was all it could handle. I always mow WOT about 2800 rpm. I normally mow in "B" range in second gear. Today, I had to drop down to "A" range in third gear.

FYI, I took delivery last Friday of my new MX-6 to use with my 4320 CUT. On Saturday I put 8 hours of work on the rotary cutter doing a 20 acre horse pasture that had a 4 foot stand of dry rye grass and secondary growth of sage brush that had regrown since tillage last Fall. I used my 400X FEL with bucket as front end ballast (JD manual recommends using 710 lbs. of front ballast weight plates). Running the tractor at rated 2400 RPM PTO power in 2nd gear of B range this configuration worked very well and felt solid. The MX-6 is well designed with a substantial gear box and heavy material construction for tough duty. When comparing competitive rotary cutter specs I couldn't find another manufacture that I considered as good as the MX-6 for the money (paid $2230 new complete with front and rear chain guards - which I highly recommend.) Weighing over 1000 lbs. and extending a long length behind the tractor, I would certainly be careful too keep transport speeds down less the MX-6 could become "the tail that would wag the dog."

Ok, I have a 4310 and MX6.

I have cut:
short grass
tall grass
lespidisa
small trees
rocks
oil field pipe

my property ranges from gently rolling to shear cliffs.

My only issue is with transport. As was just stated the MX6 can sure wag the dog.

But bogging down the tractor has never been a problem.

I certainly do not blame anyone for going to the MX5. Transports easier, and there is less chance of causing a sideways slide.

But I can assure you the MX6 cuts like crazy, even behind a 4310.
