We're talking the same, as I have. The round yellow knob for the mid PTO (you call a lever, and I called a switch which it isn't in an electrical sense), needs to be engaged before the rear PTO 'lever' is engaged (pushed forward). This knob (lets call it that to avoid the confusion for the moment) is either down (off) or up (on). This knob is only to be activated (moved to on) when the PTO is dis-engaged otherwise the gears will grind. If this procedure has been comprimised, there may be internal gear damage that needs to be repaired. This knob is not activating a clutch, and it must have the gears stopped to engage them.
The rear PTO 'lever' (again, lets call it that for discussion) is for the engagement of the PTO clutch and engages the PTO drive train when 'pushed' forward, and dis-engages the clutch when 'pulled' rearward. This engagement causes the MidPTO to run if the gears are already engaged from the 'knob' being pulled up. Both the rear PTO and the mid PTO operate at the same time.
I think if you get the sequence right, and the combinations figured out, you may not have a problem (unless damage has been done to the mid PTO gears).
