JD 4400 snow blowing observation

We have had several snow falls of 5 inches or so here in Northern Minnesota lately. I went out the other morning early to clear the one mile private road and discovered both headlights were burned out. I got along without them but when I finished I decided to open the front grill and take out the bulbs so I could replace them. This is the way you access the battery also. Well the battery was encased in ice. Apparently the fan draws in some of the snow flying around while using the blower and it melts as it hits the radiator and then refreezes on the battery. My shop does have some heat so it melted off in a few hours but it was a surprise to see a battery on ice.

interesting. i'll have to keep an eye out for that when i get my front mount done (hopefully for next year!).

Chuck - if you came up with the LxW .. I'd make you a freebie screen for a test. I got some new magnets to try as a way to avoid using typical snaps. I lived in WI and went to school in MPLS, so I have memories of blocking radiators with cardboard .. blankets and lightbulbs, etc. (I'm glad they are memories.)

Screening off the front w/o actually blocking the radiator may prevent this. I'm always looking for stuff to make.. PM or email jim@wetstuff.com

I doubt the ice will harm the battery so I wouldn't be too alarmed.
Prolly a lot of other things snow covered when using a blower.
