Has any one ever had trouble keeping the rear wheel bolts tight on the 4000 series?I noticed yesterday on one side mine were starting to backout of the rim and when the wheels were installed last year they were tightened substantially when installed.
Thanks in advance
Scott

Scott,

Have you followed the recommended torque settings in the owners manual? I would begin there to see if that helps.

An other thing to do is not to go in reverse.... /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I had the left rear tire come loose and just about fell off on my 4100. Only had 34 hrs. on the tractor when that happened. Some thought that the threads had been installed 'backwards' (left vs. right handed threads on all of the bolts). The dealer thought that it was probably his fault; when they installed my backhoe the left rear tire was removed for ease of install on the sub-frame. They just did not torque things up afterwards. A few new bolts (and a little chipped paint) and the tractor was back in no time. When I researched things, I read that this was a frequent problem with the JD Gator series.

The operators handbook on my JD 790 tells me to go through a specific proceedure when the tractor is delivered and then any time a wheel lugs are loosened.

A: Torque front to 98 lb-ft rear 137 lb-ft.
B: After driving tractor 100 meters ( 109 yards ) , and before placing it under load , retighten the hardware to specified torque.
C: Check hardware after tractor for 3 hours and again after 10 hours.
D: Check hardware frequently and keep tight.

Hope this helps

Hi Scott,

I did have the left side rear wheel bolts loosen-up a couple of times in the first 100 hrs. I was doing construction work around my new home, so she was getting a good work-out. I think the problem (at least on mine) is the countersink in the wheel is rather shallow, not giving it much seat area, and the paint on the wheel seemed to get "squished" out of the seat. Although I don't know why it was worse on the left side.

It wouldn't hurt to let your dealer know.

Good Luck !

Thank you,
I knew I was not the only one that ever had this happen before.About a year ago I read somewhere people were having this problem.
Thanks again

I haven't had any problems with my 4300, but probably that's only because my dealer told me at least six times to make sure I checked all the wheel bolts routinely for the next few days whenever a wheel is changed for any reason. So I go around with the torque wrench at least once a week and make sure. It would be, ah, embarrassing, to say the least, to have a wheel fall off! /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
