Hey, Hillbilly! Ive been a lurker for the last 5 wks here, and at compact tractor and believe its time to come out into the light with the rest of you guys and ask some questions of my own..But first,to your question... Ive been pricing a new 4400 with R-1 tires and have 2 quotes in front of me . Q-1 has a slash mark(-),(I take this to mean no charge), and Q-2 has a price of $ 220.00 (Would this be a exchange price?) Iwas told at both places that R-3's, and R-4s come already on the tractors! Hillbilly, do you already have R3s or R4s? Are you looking to buy a complete new set for replacements? Are the R3s or R4s lacking in some area? I plan on buying my tractor with the R1s because i want the traction... would like to hear your response. Thanks and BTW, GREAT site!!!! Oh yea, how do you like the 4400 model?

Back in March my Jd 4400 hydrostat old style axle with 175 hours on the clock went to the shop:
1.Differental lock failure.
2.Tractor would not start.
3.Hydraulic oil leaking from top of rear end under seat.
4.Starter was not engaging all of the time.
Well here is what the dealer repaired:
1.Replacement of the differental lock.
2.Replace the hydrostat transmission pump(metal shavings from the diff. lock had damaged pump).
3.Replaced fuel pump.
4.Replaced starter.
5.Fixed leak.
Still experincing problem:
1.At times still won't start(have to take lines off of fuel pump etc and reassemble) then it will start.
Tires:I am not sure what is meant about your question of Q-1 and Q-2(I do not know what that would be without researching it myself)
The R-4 tires do not offer the traction I need here on my farm in West Virgina,I have a lot of steep hills I have to get over these R-4 are fair weather tires, although I like the width for stability but that is as far as it goes.
I am going to have to purchase the R-1 tires and rims,I suffered through last winter,I am not going to again. I suppose I will have a set of R-4 rims and tires leaning against the wall in my barn unless I could sell them later on,then to make things worse I bought 3 wheelweights for each back tire and these wheelweights will not fit on the R-1 rims.I do not know if I will be able to trade those to my dealer for R-1 weights or not.
If you desire to ever put tire chains on the rear tires of your JD4400,I do not see how,you cannot hardly get a sheet of paper between the fender and the tire.I suppose this is a styling issue? The Kubotas have all kinds of room between the tires and fenders.
The John Deere dealership I have been dealing with are 1st class all the way.John Deere is good (in my opinion) about service and parts supply, but they should be you are paying a premium for everything.
Be careful if you buy implements they are very exspensive,I have the 513 rotary cutter and it is a lightweight implement if I ever seen one,I could have bought a King Kutter or an other brand for a lot less money and had a lot more metal in it. Next time I will and paint it green and put some John Deere decals on it for looks.Green paint is cheaper in a can than if you buy the implement with it already applied.
I have 11 months left on my JD4400 warranty,I will be watching the tractor real close. I follow the operators manual and use nothing but John Deere oils and grease and filters. The tractor is a dream to drive and operate,it has a very comfortable operators station etc.
I have bought several extras,a nice canopy, lights ...........
Anyway if you want know anything else,I will try to accomodate you or anyone else.

Geez Hillbilly, your scarin me! It doesnt sound like your very happy with your 4400! Ive been all excited about buying this model, but now ive really got butterflys!(its an awfull lot of moneyand is it worth it) Should i start a post with the two quotes that i have from the 2 dealers ? (Quote-1 and Quote-2) I think the R-1s would work for me better than the R-4s here in Mn. BTW, what does 2-position or 8-position steel wheels mean? Thanks for answering and thanks,DFB, for the tire info....

To your question on the two position versus the eight postition wheels.

All of the two position are the front rims. By mounting the rim either inside in or inside of the rim out, it changes the stance of the tractor. The distance between the tires.

All of the eight position are rear tires with a center disc that bolts onto the outer rim that holds the tire. By having the disc in or out versus the rim in or out and vice versa gives you the different stances. The wider the better for more stability. Also if you have your rims on the rear mounted all the way out it will give you more clearance inbetween the fender and the tire. But that distance will be less with the r-4 tires because of the wider tire. The r-1 does not have as wide of a footprint.

Hope this helps

I am happy with my JD 4400 now, it is not setting in the repair shop for 2 + weeks when I am needing it.They are nice tractors, but the problems could have happened with any other tractor. If you want the 4400 go for it.My next tractor will be a JD 4600 or 4700.
