Hey all,

I noticed while schlepping some compost around that my suicide handle was in a different position with every trip to the pile. The cause is that the wheel doesn't stop turning at what should be the limit of travel. The steering gear stops at a hard limit, but the steering wheel can still be turned without a lot of force.

The issue appears to me to be the steering control valve, but I have no idea if there is a simple/cheap or difficult/expensive fix. Does anyone have any experience with this issue, or brilliant ideas?

Many thanks!

Remember, you have boosted the hydraulic pressure. The orbital will bypass at full lock and you would have needed more force prior to your mod.

Hey Spanner,

Thanks again!

If that's the case, it's a side-effect that I haven't heard anyone else report. The IRV shim is supposed to be a very common mod.

I guess I noticed that the issue existed before the mod, but to a much smaller extent. You're saying that there is a bypass somewhere? Integrated into the steering valve perhaps?

I've not had one apart but I was told they bypass internally. Ball bearing type from memory? There's a seal kit available but no other parts listed. We only ever replaced the one that leaked as the customer wanted the warranty on the complete unit Vs. the rebuild. The apprentices took it and dismantled it one lunchtime and I last saw it in the recycling...

Understood.

One more worn out part to replace. I keep learning the same lesson about old tractors. They cost just as much as new tractors.

I looked up the pic. You could open that plug on the side and see what you find?

Thanks Spanner.

Wouldn't hurt to look. If there is damage or debris stuck in it, maybe I could avoid a replacement. I need to tear into it again tonight anyway. Higher hydraulic pressure = new leak to find and fix.

:horseshoe: Good luck.

I know that this is comparing 'apples to oranges'... the OP has Power Steering whereas my 4105 has Hydraulic Steering. Both have a maximum turn, if you will.

My hydraulic steering wheel never comes back to the original position, yet the steering is precise. It hasn't bothered me as I just figure that it is an idiosyncrasy of hydraulic steering.

It's also why I've never considered adding a 'suicide knob' to my rig.

If there is no mechanical linkage from the steering controls (steering wheel in this case) to the front wheels (spindles/tie rod) you have hydrostatic steering.
If there is mechanical linkage you can have power steering. Whether a power steering box, or assist cylinder.

I think the JD 445 has hydrostatic steering too.
