John Deere 4520
Just bought a 4520 compact hydrostatic trans 2013 with 170 hours but no manual. Shifting between range A, B and C is extremely difficult. When attempting, i come to full stop, lower rpm, but its a fight to change the selector. Is there a trick to this? Thanks for any help..

Sometimes just bumping the forward or reverse pedal will help. They are often difficult to engage, if the tractor rolls just a hair forward or back can help.

Yes, bumping the reverse pedal sometimes helps but not always. I assumed JD wouldn’t produce a product this difficult to work. Thanks for your reply. Bill

Welcome to TBN

but its a fight to change the selector

Not sure what you mean by this fight.. can you expand a bit?

But you may have the forward or reverse pedals hanging up a bit, and that will effect being "full stop". See i f you can assure that they are in fact in a neutral position. Just a thought... may be dry and sticking..

Deere didn't make it this way... fyi

By fight I mean that I cannot move the selector with one hand or two hands; it will not change positions without pressing the forward or reverse pedals but this takes several tries before the selector will finally move. The pedals appear to return to their original position after movement but how would I know if they are really at a neutral position? Thanks for your comments..

Put the parking brake on, shift into neutral, then push the forward pedal all the way down.
Let off, wait till the pedal comes up and gently try to shift into gear.
It may or may not go in depending on how the gears are lined up, but you are looking to see if it grinds.
Then do the same thing again, but in reverse.
If it grinds or won't go, then you feel it move and go in, your pedal is sticking and something in the linkage needs to be lubricated and freed up.

Bebo I have a 4520 Power Reverser and the gear shift range selector is not a problem just remember to stop tractor and in neutral select the range you want to work with. is your tractor a power reverser or some other designation?
this tractor has a manual or hydraulic clutch then 4 ranges select is A same for B and C gear changes. if a problem on left side look at the levers going to transmission maybe just lubrication or removing brush trash or material blocking the shafts. very little to go wrong.
Don't know what you are you are going to do with tractor . But remember every thing easily damaged is hung as after thought on bottom Hydraulic filter 1/2 inch from right rear wheel if picks up stick or rock the filter is damaged. Hydraulic lines to FWL. are damaged should you drive over rough ground. Steering cylinder is below front axle so lines bust if backing up while bush hogging and hit stump
Not being overly negative. if had at design stage or early engineering stage a individual that had used tractors. it would be a easy strong tractor to use.
mine has close to 2000 hours only problems is external hydraulic. breakage due to getting yanked or bent warped because in open spaces something is grabbing the lines..

I’ll go into more detail, this is my understanding of how the gear ranges work in a JD hydro. They are straight cut gears so they have to line up to shift in easy. On my JD sometimes it slips right in and other times it won’t. On mine it helps if the brake is off. I have even used the loader to bounce the tractor to move the wheels a little bit. If the wheels can roll a little bit it usually slips right in. With mine it only two ranges and neutral is in between. I’m not sure how yours works but if mine is stuck going into gear while it’s in neutral a tiny roll of the wheels let’s it slip in gears
Easy.

My 2005 JD 3520 ehydro is the same; just need to roll the wheels a little bit in either direction before the range selector will easily move into gear. Seems to be a random occurrence. Sometimes, there is no resistance to moving into gear, other times, just need a little roll to make it happen. This has become normal operating procedure for me now.

Gentlemen, thank you for taking the time to comment. In the end, moving the tractor forward or backward, sometimes multiple times, allows movement of the shift selector. Works the same from moving in/out of all-wheel/two-wheel drive. Thanks again. Bill
