I'm getting lost in the specs and finding it difficult to compare these tractors. I do lots of loader work and bush hogging. also comparing 400cx loader to la854. To anyone that owns a mx5100 is the 8f/8r transmission enough gears?? looking to spend $30g

If you do alot of loader work.. eHydro is a real advantage. Next in line would be the shuttle shift; last would be non-synchro shift tranny - IMO.
Does the MX have a shuttle? The 4520 has the PowerReverser tranny and the 5040GST is a shuttle, yes?
You might have difficulty staying in your $30K budget if you go with a new model. Lot's of good used, low hour machines around right now.

yes, the mx5100 has a mechanical shuttle. the powr reverser on the JD is nice, but there loader is week. I've decided on a L5240 Hydro. There's six ranges on this machine and 3 different modes (1 manual and two computer controlled) so they have come up with a whole new meaning to infinite speeds.

I've got the MX5000 predecessor to the MX5100. Tranny is 8x4 on the 5000 and that's been plenty for bush hogging and my LIMITED loader work.
For LOTS of loader work, I'd go with a Hydrostatic transmission. The productivity edge is definitely there, there's no clutch to wear out and it's easy to be safe and precise. Haybaler9 got it right with the L5240 HST; great choice. Another consideration might be the L4740 HST. All four tractors (4740, 5040, 5100, 5240) have the same basic 148 cu. in. engine. The 5100 and the 5240 both have turbochargers. Don't think the others do.

picked up the new toy today. Loaded sand in my two 2 yard sanders and pushed some snow around. I love the hydro. the only thing that would make it better is a push button diff. lock and have all the ranges push button or shift on the fly, but with the electronic hi/low it's not very often I have to change the range. I still reach for the reverser every time I get a load in the bucket, but that will wear off. it is twice the tractor my L4200 was.
